  • Swap File Gets Bigger and Bigger

Whenever I play civ 3 the swap file grows and grows until it fills the hard drive although I have almost 500 megs available. I am pretty sure this is enough, isn't it? Is there a patch that fixes this rampantly growing swap file? Fortunately I haven't lost any games YET... but I would appreciate an answer, thanks.

If you add more RAM to your system, then the game won't need to use the swap file as much.

      This is a 'known' problem.
      I think i have seen a swap file of 800meg !!!
after that i made a smaller fixed swap file.

Thanks to auto saves, you won't ever "lose" any games. I can see how this would be irritating, though. How much physical memory do you have? I have 256 physical and a fixed 256 swap file, and Civ3 never gets terribly huge. How big of a map are you using? How many civs?

Best advice (given what little you've said): Set a fixed swap file size of around double your physical memory, but no less than 256 and no greater than 512. Ideally, your swap file should be the first file on the drive and completely unfragmented. I usually create a separate partition just for the swap file.
