    What if...

What if you made a new naval unit with the settler flag on it, and make it available after say, synthetic fibres?

    Wouldn't that work?

Did you realise your 'have a nice day's are some of the most annoying things I have ever come across in my life? LOL

When I first saw you say that, I couldn't work out if you were serious or purposly trying to annoy people.

I tend to agree with you on that one. I usually read my email first thing in the morning, and it bugs the hell out of me dealing with someone who's disgustingly cheerful at that time of the day. At least until I've managed to get a few cups of coffee in me.

Actually I was puzzled too the first couple of times I crossed some of your posts, panag. I guess I'm on that coffee-wagon too.

The first thing I'm going to do with that flag is to keep mountains off the place-city-list, and remove the flag from tundra and desert. I think it will give a nice touch.
Actually still with 6 billion people on earth most of the landmass is without much permanent human life. Even one of seven continents is not really settled.

I just hate to see those out of-bounds-cities I just has to put there only so that no AI settles there. Cities without much production or commerce is just... well overhead. I think that nomansland can add some stratigic spice (recon, patrol and surprise attacks).
We have that today where large lumps of mountain are present. And both the AI and I uses that.

Exactly - the AI is settling for positional power. I do that as well.

I could see disallowing cities on desert, allowing them on coastal (historically, even ancient civs were able to 'build up' shallow water areas to build cities like the site of modern Mexico City) but not sea or ocean, and adding a new terrain 'glacier' or 'ice shelf' that disallowed cities.

There have been SO many times when the perfect city site is a square that's a lake or a coastal inlet.

That would make the game play kinda interesting.

                      PS:

                      HAVE A NICE DAY!

Sorry, couldn't resist. The voices made me do it.....

You could tech-restrict water cities. Have the Water Settler (for lack of a better name) require a certain tech.

You can have territory on ocean tiles if they're within the standard city radius.

The big question ought to be: will water cities be allowed on just coastal squares, or will sea and ocean squares be allowed as well. What I mean to say is what is the point of playing with 80% water if you can build it up as if it were land.

There are certainly enough artistically able graphics modders out there to give us a proper “waterworld” unit. (Too bad Firaxis doesn’t have the better ones working in its' art department.)

And panag, just for kicks, for those “non-morning” people, for one day end all your posts with “Have a @#*&$ day! ” I bet that will put coffee spray on the monitor!

You can allow cities on any terrain but that does not mean it will have different graphics.

I gave coastal terrain the ability to support cities.
                              My findings:

You can take a settler to a coastal in a boat and found a city.

You cannot move land troops into the city, not even marines because the game still considers the terrain water.

You can attack the city with ships.

If the city site is next to land terrain a road on the land will NOT connect to the city. So much for artificial land bidges.

You can probably use the city as a landbridge, and get units into it, if you just have some sort of transport vessel in the city itself. At least that's how it worked in SMAC.
