  • Quick question for a MODERATOR about zip files

Yeah, so I'm posting a couple of .zip files and no one- myself included- can sucessfully extract them...
I've tried Winace and Winzip (8.0)

    Any solutions?

You mean the files that say download "attachment"? It seems to work sometimes, but not always

When choosing where to download the to, rename the file to "anything.zip" (without the brackets, and anything is in place of a filename you chose).

      Hope this helps...

Hmm, it works for me... Maybe you should try to save them as "attachment" and rename them AFTER you've downloaded them, if you haven't done so already...

no, i just doublechecked doing that and no saving it as attachment and renaming the file after i have downloaded it does not make it unzippable for me.

hetairoi22, have you successfully downloaded and unziped anything from m_m_x or from cassembler? any file from either of those two is an example of a file that i cannot unzip.

I have had two people say that they can't unzip a file of mine that's in the Files section. I was able to download and unzip the file though. I don't understand what the problem is.

what program are you using to zip it up and what program to unzip it? what version if possible, and if you can link to your file and we can test it out.

                      i'm using winzip 7.0 sr-1 (1285)

The file of mine that some people have had trouble with is CivStats.zip which is attached to the first post in this thread. I believe I originally ziped it using WinZip 8.0. I have certainly downloaded it and unziped it using both WinZip 8.0 and WinZip 8.1. As far as I know, the zip file format hasn't changed for a long time, so even earlier version shouldn't have a problem with it (but you never know).

I did notice that when I downloaded the file using IE 6.0, the default filename was "attachment" instead of "CivStats.zip" as it should have been. I just corrected the filename in the "Save As" dialogue box, and everything was OK.

                            Possible Solution

I have had the exact same problem as you. What I did is download the attachment file as if it were any zip file. Next, I right clicked on the 'attachment' file and opened with WINRAR. It is a nice program similar to winace or winzip. It works for me. I hope this helps.
I came. I saw. I conquered. And sometimes get conquered.

no, the files that wont unzip dont work with winrar either. yes i renamed attachment to, for example, attachment.zip and no they would not unzip.

natrunner: do you have a problem opening zip files put up by cassembler and m_m_x? did those problems only manifest themselves with winzip and not winrar? which files were those and what version of winrar and winzip do you use?
