  • Wanted: 256x256 mostly land maps!

I'm looking for some really big maps with lots of land. I want to play with 8-16 civs and let everyone have room to almost expand at will.

Or does anyone know how to hack Civ3 so that I can custom size the map like you can in SMAC for a random map.

that's my question exactly! i was about to ask over in general, cause i wasn't sure where to put it. 180x180 is way too friggin small. i need at least 256x256 to be comfortable...
it's just my opinion. can you dig it?

Have you tried the real world map =) ?

It's pretty darn big, and even in the 1800s i can still find empty patches of land

        earth(huge) is still only 180x180 :/

besides, i've always found earth to be a really irritating for civ games

Why not go into the civ3mod.bic (after boacking it up of course) and change the world sizes, science rate and corruption accordingly?

because... i had no idea you could do that

why does the tech rate need to change? is there a concise link i should read about this?

what values would you recommend for the following map sizes:

            80x125 (cause that's how i always played civ2 )
            100x200
            128x256
            192x256
            256x256

and is there a way to change the max to something beyond 256x256?
it's just my opinion. can you dig it?

You may want to change the tech rate on bigger maps because otherwise you will reach the end of the tech tree rather quickly - when you have 50 or more cities early on, you will be getting new techs every 4 turns even with the research turned down if the tech rate is too low.

so, raising the tech rate slows down research?

what about corruption and civ spacing?

Here are my suggestions, I basically increased the map size for all maps. Note, I increased max cities by 25% overall. This has worked pretty well so far.

Tiny is 80x80; distance 10; max cities 15; tech rate 100
Small is 100x100; distance 12; max cities 20; tech rate 120
Standard is 140x140; distance 16; max cities 30; tech rate 160
Large is 180x180; distance 20; max cities 40; tech rate 200
Huge is 255x255; distance 25; max cities 52; tech rate 240

EDIT: Oh yeah I would also increase the city size to 7 or 8 (up from 6) and 14 or 16 (up from 12). I think the best mix is probably 7/14.

Duh, now I feel stupid for even asking, I should have known better.

I just got so used to .txt files and being able to just browse thru them and change things with ease, I never thought to just change the core Civ3 file with the editor!
