My thoughts on Civ3 maps...
Hurray! They use the same utterly useless coordinate system as in Civ2 (i.e. only (even, even) and (odd, odd) coordinates, probably usefull for nothing other than easier programming)... So, say, a 100x100 map is actually 50 wide and 100 high (expressed in the standard civ2 size naming). A Civ2 50x80 map would be 100x80 in Civ3. In other words, since the max for Civ3 is 256x256 (or is it 255x255?), the largest Civ3 map is no larger than a "gigantic" map as was already possible for Civ2 multiplayer and test of time.
Big bummer! As Firaxis once said civ3 maps could be 6 times larger than Civ2 maps... I guess not, except in their deceiving coordinate system, that is.
So much for my little rant. I started a new thread solely dedicated to the bic file format. I already included your knowledge, Gramphos.
