  • Sid One City Challenge

Well, here we go again. Pursuing my series of ‘crazy’ Sid games, here’s my latest: an OCC cultural win.

If somebody is interested in playing it, here is the starting location: I had to ‘twist’ the map a bit, in order to have a decent starting position. Of course, with my usual luck my (only) iron resource was depleted after about 30 turns. Needless to say, my knights, railroads and factory were a bit more complicated to build, and the Iron Works would remain a hopeless dream…

The strategy of this game was simple (in fact, I wanted to achieve a diplo win… ): go for Republic asap, build the Great Library, then be in a position to built Copernicus’ Observatory and Newton’s University. Afterward, go for Steam Power, Industrialization, ToE etc.
In between, I managed to build the Mausoleum of Mausollos, Sun Tsu, Leonardo’s Workshop, the Sistine Chapel and The Universal Suffrage.

    About the map:
This is a tiny archipelago map, 8 civs, 80% water. All islands started with all resources needed to build a spaceship. As in other Sid games (as explained in my 5CC thread), the number of cities determines if the game is winnable or not. In this case, the number of cities should not exceed the magical number of 4. With 5 and more, the AI manages to out-science you at the beginning of the Middle Ages (about 10-15 turns to get Theology to your 25+). After a few techs, you’re hopelessly out-researched.

Therefore, this map was built in order to accommodate a maximum of 4 cities per island. Some AIs built only 3, with no noticeable lagging behind in research. With my twisted sense of humor, I put some volcanoes on some islands. It was quite fun watching a torched city being founded again for the 3rd time… Well, at least it kept whole generations of archeologists happy

Worse ones? What I want to know is if you have seen better ones? Three lux in the city is maximus. Fish and wheat with water. Six of the 8 tiles have a bonus.

            Very nice indeed.

Good lord that is nice. I guess this probably has to do with 8 civs on a Tiny map, though.

You could have gone for Domination with that one, had it not been on Sid.
                Seriously. Kung freaking fu.

I assume you edited that start?

Yeah when you consider that he said he had iron and coal in the city as well. That could mean evey tile has a bonus. That I have never seen.

Yeah, it does seem impossible. But the phrase 'The starting location (I have seen worse ones...)' really sounds like this is random, though I can't believe it. Then again, if there's only enough room for one city/civ or so anyway, these things may not be that unlikely, especially if he's stacking the starts with 3 billion, etc. and generally looking at starts with more hills/mountains. If he was making the map, wouldn't he give himself different lux resources?

It has to be an edited start. The two wines are on bonus grasslands, which does not happen in the normal C3C.
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

Damn. Impressive nonetheless. I may play this in the near future, though I can't say when.

I would take this to mean he did edit the map.

The most bonuses I have seen around a starting location was 7 out of eight. It was a long time ago on a large map. I was in the middle of grassland, and there was lots of wheat and cattle around my starting location. It was amazing. Unfortunately, it was one of my first games, so I lost anyway.
