Yeah, using MPPs againt MPPs is the higher school of Civ3 diplomacy. And it can backfire real bad.
    Seriously. Kung freaking fu.

This comment could possibly go into a new thread, but everybody's here already...

I have tried to fire up an Emperor game with some starting advantages. Is it part of Emperor that you MUST start with a poor-to-crappy (not horrible) position?

I spent most of the night just generating start positions to see the variety of what would happen. Only once out of about 30 starts did I see food bonus squares within any reasonable distance of the start square.

It looks like this will be a chore. I finally took a start on nice grassland and got lucky to find two wheats over to the side where I could plop the second city and run irrigation. I have horses fairly close but iron is a ways away. Maybe it will need an Archer rush!

p.s. I would be happy to show pictures but I decidely do not know the technique for cutting down my jpgs to 800x800.

I am sure there are many methods, but I prefer using Irfanview.

It is free, can capture screens and resize them to 800 and format them to jpeg.

Yea I usually take the whole night playing the first 100 turns of a game, and by then I can tell if I want to bother continuing.

In my previous post here I mentioned how I got 2 civs with a MPP to help me against the rest of the world... well 6 turns before the end of our MPP portugal attacked my nuclear sub with their frigate!!! Is this an AI mistake or did they really mean to attack me??? (im not that far ahead, i can only build frigates too, no oil!)

As for Irfanview, its real easy, view --> resize image --> choose. I suggest getting that aswell...

That would be the infamous sub bug, game breaker for many. No, the AI probably did not intend to attack your nuclear sub with its frigate.

FYI: There is a workaround for the sub bug. Go into the editor and give subs the Hidden Nationality flag, the same flag that Privateers have. Your sub can still get accidently attacked but it won't trigger a war or any MPPs.

I use the owrkaround where I do not build subs or at least do not send them out alone.

I use the workaround where I load up the auto-save from the previous turn.

I use the workaround where I never get the far in the game anyway.

If you ask me, Subs are a little underpowered, anyway.
                      That bug (I'm assuming it's a bug, and not a built-in U-boat emulation) is a little annoying.

My biggest concern about using that workaround is what it would do to AI sub utilization (to whatever extent that AIs use subs to begin with). On one hand, I don't want my transports to be attacked by subs during peacetime That's especially true in light of the fact that subs have the stealth attack attribute, and could therefore attack even escorted transports. On the other hand, I can envision a lot of AI-AI fratricide since AIs seem inclined to kill hidden nationality units when they get the chance. I suppose one could take the view that those two situations balance each other somewhat. But my own view is more along the lines of, "Two wrongs don't make a right."

Question: have you noticed anything about the extent to which either or both of my concerns is legitimate?

By the way, I've never taken any particular interest in using subs to begin with, so I don't have to worry about having AIs accidentally attack my (nonexistent) subs.

For those who are interested in more thoughts about subs and Hidden Nationality, we're discussing the issue in this thread in the Apolyton University forum.

I'm going to have to go back and learn how to manage my Civ better for Emperor. I ran a game, sword rushed the Babylonians, stayed even on techs through the Ancient period. THen, could not get going economically and research-wise after that. Boom, I am three techs behind and sucking wind.

I went back to Monarch and am winning fairly easily again. 3-4 techs ahead in the Medieval period. Cornered the market on horses on my continent. Etc., etc.

It seems a big jump to Emperor. Does somebody have a link to a good thread about managing things? I seemed to do OK on the expansion and protection.

Look for the Ducki does emperor or Moutain Sage threads. If you do not find what you need there, start your own.

I do not have a direct link for them.
