  • Total Newbie here - Run for your lives!

Howdy, folks. I finally broke out my Civ 3 & Conquests and downloaded the latest patch two days ago. So far it's fun and I'm sure I'm making tons of newbie mistakes . It's something I'm very good at!

Like this one, I decided to play the tutorial game on Civ 3 then later that night when I finally got around to reading the Conquests manual I finally realized in order to play Conquests I gotta to use the Conquests disc .

So second time around I popped in the C3C disc and started up a new game.

    Few questions:

Is there a way to turn off map grids? I tried the menu and shortcut key command and either didn't work.

Is there a way to 'mark' tiles in the way you could in SMAC/X by using landmark naming features? It's handy to mark down your planned city spots. So far there doesn't seem to be such option available.

I had some more but I cannot recall those right now

Yes its one of the three buttons in the top left of the screen. I believe its the Triangle which will pull up a menu and you can select Map and the grid turn on/ off is there.

I dont think this is possible.

CTRL-G works for me to toggle grid on/off.

That's what I also tried. Didn't work. I must be doing something wrong

Told ya, I'm a newbie . Will try again when I get home later today.

Control G turns the grid off and on, but the default grid setting is off, so this really shouldn't be a concern.

Well, the grid on/off doesn't seem to follow any rules or even the conquests.ini settings...
I've allways wanted to play "Russ Meyer's Civilization"

Nope, sorry - there's no landmarking facility available in Civ3. And I'd repeat what was said about turning off the grid, but it's already done. Hope it actually works...

You can always refer to the shortcut keylist at the back of the Civ3 manual - the only thing that vague document is good for.

I can't imagine ctrl-g not working. That would be a very weird problem indeed.

Ok I may be a Civ 3 newbie but I'm not a computer newbie. It's confirmed - once turned on, the map grid cannot be turned off.

Also the exploring option doesn't work after a while. After completely exploring my landmass, I had some military and scout units set to exploring and after few turns they stopped exploring after running into barbarians. After taking care of those barbarians they simply refuse to explore again. I have to move them manually and 600 years later exploring feature still refuse to work.

Um, I just tried it on several turns and turned the map grid on and off at will

Did you use some kind of modded game or scenario to test this???

Hmmm, I wonder if something is the matter with your install because I played a standard non modded game, and I quickly pulled up a save and turned the map grid on and off at will

                        Over several turns. Hmmmmmmmmm

How much RAM does your computer have Barinthus?

....And, (forgive me for asking) but, do you have a valid version of the game or a pirated version? I have to ask this because if you do have an illegal version, turning on and off your grid squares will eventually be the least of your problems with your game.

                            indeed.

the grid function should turn on and off as you use Control - G

certainly hope you are having fun with the game regardless.

another good place to pick up tips on the functions is in the Civ III Help Forum

you may need to change the number of days in the showing threads to more than 30 days, but there is some great stuff in here

The Ctrl-G thing not working is WEIRD, and I can't add anything more to it, I'm afraid. All you could do is email Firaxis or Breakaway Games and tell them your problem.

As for the exploring - I can't claim to have used it much, but as far as I'm aware it causes units to seek out undiscovered terrain. If you've discovered it all, I can see why the function may not work anymore.
