When did that happen? You sure that is not a Civ2 thing? I am not aware of any special defenses for spears/pikes.

civ2 thing. I don't think that was ever implemented in civ3.

It's a civ2 thing. In both civ2 and civ3, a phalanx/spearman is 1/2/1; however, in civ2, pikemen were 1/2/1 with a +50% bonus vs mounted units, whereas in civ3 pikemen are simply 1/3/1 without any bonus
