not only you would need a powerful system in order to play a game with thousands of cities, the turns would also be much longer...
I watched you fall. I think I pushed.

A 256 X 256 map with no cities allowed on Tundra and Desert is pretty much a perfect size.

            Civ > money > friends

New friends? Who needs them, this community is much more inclusive than a bunch of backstabbing so-called friends.

                I have enough friends.
sometimes I need to sit back and destroy some nations instead of making friends.

                    Hardly........
                    but I'm busy right now

The key is: big maps, lots of AI players, and you have plenty of time to make friends between the turns

Also, if you know a programming language, and have the compression scheme they used, you could count the occurences of cities that belong to you by reading through the save file.
