  • What's an acceptable turn time?

Ok, I just felt like doing this for fun.

What is acceptable for a turn time on a huge map in the late game varies a bit and I find it interesting to note the opinions.

This more of a "where do you lose patience" poll I think...

    Anyway, here it is.
    65
0-10 seconds (I'm so quick, I need my turn to come up so I can keep my strats flowing)
    3.08%
    2
10 sec - 1 minute (Good enough to rethink my strategy)
    38.46%
    25
1-3 minutes (I like watching the AI units shuffle about)
    26.15%
    17
3-5 minutes (I really like watching the AI units shuffle about)
    9.23%
    6
5-10 minutes (Ok, since I like more time to formulate my next move)
    10.77%
    7
over 10 minutes (At this point i'm either pondering a degree in electrical engineering so I can design a comp capable of ending this mess, or i'm craving a banana split, so I leave to get one)
    12.31%

While there might be a physics engine that applies to the jugs, I doubt that an entire engine was written specifically for the funbags. - Cyclotron - debating the pressing issue of boobies in games.

    *edit*

think i misunderstood the question, so... once you have 100 or so cities, at least for me, i stop being real "personal" with them and have a fairly standard method i use for all of them, as far as in what order to build things and terrain improvements, etc.

I've spent 2 hours+ on a few turns before (1600+ un-automated workers and 400+ cities to micromanage). Sometimes it's "acceptable"... but usually I wouldn't play if the turns were more than a few minutes or so each.

I vote 10 sec to 1 min, but I will take it as long as necessary for a key game.

Aeson, that sounds like a HoF milk run to which you have to pay what ever the price.

I OFTEN spend 10-15 minutes on a turn in MID-game if I am at war or moving several units about. When I have 200-400+ units in the late game, I can easily be spending 15-30+ minutes on a single turn. Sometimes I'm not even at war, but reviewing production, micro-ing workers, diplomacy, ....

IOW, I ponder. I'm not in a race to see how fast I can finish the game.

            clarification

Is "turn time" the time between pressing space / clicking to end a turn and the time when the first unit to be moved is highlighted in for the next turn, or the time between moving the first unit on one turn and moving the first unit on the next turn (or some other measure...) ?

I voted 5-10 minutes. Sometimes I will play a crazy Sid game, where it will be around one hour a turn, but I don't do that much anymore.

Silly question once you think about it. Of course it is more preferable for the AI to finish as soon as possible. Its my game, not theirs.

To me it is the time from end of turn until you have control again.
Not when it comes back to let you select a new build for a city that finished one.

Jaybe I don't count the time I take for a turn, I may go watch a movie in the midst of a turn.

I only care about the time I have to wait for me to be back in control. I may need to come to the internet to read something during my turn, so it could take a long time.

I assumed it was about AI turn times. My own can get very long in the late game.

meaning the time from when you click end turn to when you can move again

Up to 5 minutes depending on game size. I could cope with a little longer if I could walk off, but theres always some damn AI that wants to trade territory maps

                            NOW, he tells me.
It rarely takes as much as 5 minutes (except when I'm seeing a LOT of enemy units' moves/attacks) playing Rhye's of Civilization, and that's what I play these last few months. Rhye's world map is 170x170 with the full 32 civs. [edit:] Rhye's of Civilization mod is specially tuned to shorten loading and AI-turn times. [/edit]

When it takes longer, I just bear with it. No big deal.

Sorry if my poll confused anyone. The times in the poll are from clicking end turn to when you are in control again, and how you feel about the wait times.

Once again, this was mainly started because of the "what comp can handle a 320x320 map" thread or whatever it was, and how someone said that they have no problem on their computer because it only took 10 minutes before they regained control.

I thought that 10 minutes was long, so I made up this poll to get a feel for what everyone thinks.
