both on the plain or grass land, if I attack the infantry I will normally win, but if I am attacked by the infantry, 50% of chance (or even more) my tank will lose.

That is because the Infantry have an attack of twelve while the tanks have only a defence of ten.

Long story short: last night I created a leader at the northern most tip of my continent, owned by the Arabs, whom I am in a near phony war with so their cities are all intact. The creating unit was killed next turn, but I moved the leader out of harm’s way. This is where I paused the game.
So tonight I now am going to try to use the extra move of the leader to work it through a large Arabian territory to safety. The game is modded to not allow cities on tundra, so there is a bit of space. And I going to send an escort to meet it.
Even so, I do not have high hopes. But it is the first time I've been in this situation, so who knows?
More on topic: I now give leader creating units overblown names like “Victory Remains Ours”, “Foe Vanquisher” and such nonsense."Guess what? I got a fever! And the only prescription is ... more cow bell!"

Actually, Infantry has an attack of six, and Tanks a defense of eight, so Tanks should win most of the time if attacked by Inf, regardless of terrain. Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

Oh, and I tend to name Elite*s after the leader they spawned: Trajan's Legion (or Legio Traiana if I'm feeling particularly latinate), Lee's Cavalry, Agum's Mechanized, etc.Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

In C3C Infantry is att 6 def 10 and tank is 16 att and 8 def.
Inf attacks tank and wins 30.1% with no bonus for any.
Tank attacks infantry and wins 60.5% with no bonus.
So it is not a winning proposition for the infantry either way. give me 50 tanks and you 50 infantry and I will take my chances.

I once had a spearman defeat a tank, yet it didnt generate a leader. What gives?Visit First Cultural Industries

I just use 1st, 2nd, etc and usually drop them into the newly created army but I must admit that Legio Traiana does have a nice ring to it.The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.

According to some that result has never, ever happened in the history of Civ3

It happens, just not very often. There is a calculable probability. Leader generation is an entirely independent randomly-generated event. There is nothing that says if the spear wins it has to generate a leader. Anyway the spear would have to be elite first (whether it becomes elite is also random-finite probability) - you can't become elite and generate a leader as a result of the same combat.Diderot was right!

I believe the Spear (elite) has exactly the same chance as any other unit of generating a leader."Bite my shiny metal ass" - Bender B. Rodriguez
