Thanks for all the WinRAR comments. I might give it a test spin. I've also seen another format occasionally - Yenc. Any opinions on that one?

Of course you can always use WinZip to open .rar files as well if you're used to that interface, all you need is the .exe that can "unrar" .rar files. Unless I'm talking out of my a*** - haven't got either on this computer.

Some of the patches have sped up games with more civs in them - there was a noticeable speed-up when we patched to PtW 1.26f in the SPDG (Huge map, 24 civs). However, in that game it was certainly shown that the large number of civs was the real slowdown factor. Larger maps shouldn't be too bad for most of the game on a decent CPU (2G and +) - it's the combination of large map and many civs that is the killer, with the emphasis on the higher number of civs.

ok, it's my understanding that most loading is because of constant recalculating of trade routes (at least it takes forever to destroy a harbor).

what if they had the option to always be able to trade with everyone? i know that wouldn't be quite as realistic, but 15 min. load times are ridiculous (especially since you can't just leave, because 2 min. into it some civ wants to trade maps).

I find that one my Celeron 2GHz, 16 civs is about what I can have without massive load times.

I've got 512MB RAM, which, I'm told, is about the max the game can handle anyway. Can't recall what type of RAM, but shouldn't matter much, I believe.

well, now I am playing on a 200 x 200 map, only 5 civs left (including me), the waiting time between the turns are ok, around 2 to 3 minutes. but each turn still takes me 20 - 30 minutes! you know, I have to order every of my units to combat, plus managing the cities and workers. it just takes too long.

No need for all that... what sort of amount of the world's land is covered by cities/culture radii? That should give a decent estimate of the amount of calculation that is needed each turn.

                        Question:

Is the huge map 320/320 or is this a custom one? Personally, I'd love to play on a random map 4x the area of huge

It is custom. Huge is normally 160.

I find it interesting to note the different opinions on what people consider acceptable turn times.

I personally would consider a 10 minute turn time a problem. Yes, I have experienced longer and many others have.

But, perhaps everyone should tell people what they consider acceptable before posting that they have no real problems with large maps. Just so that we can all have a frame of reference.
