I run at 3ghz and 512mb of Ram and it runs fine. Of course I only have PTW so I don't get to have as many civs going on my huge maps. At one point I did bring my clock back down to 2.6Ghz and there was a NOTICEABLE difference in the time it took for not just the AI to think, but for the game to re-figure traderoutes everytime I destroyed a road or city.

NOTE: I am not useing a old P4, I am useing the very latest(excluding prescott E-core) , the C-core, with Hyperthreading enabled.

THis game really is processor intensive. Ram-wise it is not, of course its nice to WISH and HOPEFULLY think that way, since Ram is so much easier to upgrade...

If you guys wanted, I could bring this game into the shop and test the **** out of it to trully see. My friend, has his P4 clocked at around 3.6Ghz and is running a gig of ram, and Raid 0 Raptor hardrives. On -that- machine..there is -no- lag.

Blademun I have a Raptor drive (10,000 RPM) and Munchkin (sp) mem (1GB) and it is on the same HyperThread cpu that at one time use 7200 drive and I see no impact from either the mem speed or the drive.

It seems all cpu dependant. Moving to my 1.7 GH makes the times twice as long.

RAM's the cheapest way of speeding things up tho. More RAM = bigger Virtual Drive = less hard disk/cpu effort in putting files into temporary hard disk space.

If moneys no object then yes a fast new CPU (and most probably a new motherboard that can cope with it) is the way to go.

spy14, you will not get any peformance for CivIII with more mem after 512MB, unless you are running a bunch of other things at the same time.

Players with struggling games, usually shutdown other apps, so it won't do them a bit of good. Watch you graphs and you can see the usage stays under 400MB.

              I usually will be

Ive had a look at the system usage and see what you are saying, presumably the game was not programmed to recognise more than 512 mb

250x250 with max civs? I don't want to imagine how slow that would be on my Celeron 2.0GHz 512MB ...

(I have played a Huge map with extra land and 30 civs (TAM) to a domination victory - took 124h)

Keep the amount of water down (to reduce number harbors) and kill off civs as fast as you can. Those will make a big map with lots of civs a bit easier on the system.

If you play late into the game with most of the civs still around on an archipelago map, it will be the slowest of all.

If you play on Sid or Deity, it will mean more units for the AI, so wars will hurt the speed. Nothing like an AI will 1000 or so units to move to slow it down. Then let them capture a coastal city, ouch. I have timed a settler animation taking over 2 minutes on a 3GH PC in those conditions.

Thanks. The credits on the Chinese site attributed it to El mercy.
