the Napoleonic really kicks serious butt

    well worth trying

Napoleon really can have a field day smashing Europe to his will.

Have now played the scenario out several time, in both PBEM and SP.

Currently we have an ongoing PBEM where by we ganged up on Napoleon, and sent him to the cleaners... Now the dogs of war could not go back to their kennels, so our coalition has turned in on itself, and war ravages Europe on many many fronts

I had trouble taking on all of europe with napoleon. And this was only at warlord level.

True I only played it once, and I did not realize the value of diplomacy. I thought the alliances were fixed. I was fighting nearly every single country at the same time, this was not easy. I still won, but could not conquer large areas of Europe.

depending on which one you play.

WW2 pacific is all about war. Don't even bother building civilian improvements (aside from airports and harbours- but they are military improvements as well)

Mesopotamia is a builder or a conquerer scenario. It can be played either way.

I think mesoamerican can be played builder style (although I've never done it).

Same with the Japan scenario. I think you can get a diplomatic victory in that one.

Age of Discovery I almost always play a peaceful scenario.

Middle Ages. It's nice to be able to replay it as a different viable civ each time. Fascinating era, anyway.

I like the "War in the Pacific". My Dad fought there and it is kind of cool to be able to recreate different situations as I "Island Hop". I also enjoy being the underdog(Japan) and trying to figure out how to change the face of history .

I haven't tried them all yet, but out of the ones I have tried I like Rise of Rome the best. I totally owned Mesopotamia, but it was on Chieftain, so, ya...I'm doing well on Rise of Rome. I've conquered two Celt cities and five Carthaginian cities and I'm having much fun as Rome. Fall of Rome I got one or two turns in as the Ostrogoths (or was it the Visigoths...don't remember). I absolutely revile the WWII scenario, but maybe that's because I have to improve my naval combat skills significantly. I tried Sengoku, but I haven't gotten very far (I absolutely love the music). I also tried Napoleon as France. I've conquered one Italian city... that's like, so amazing......anyway, ya that's all I've tried. Rise of Rome is my favorite so far.

I have played a bunch of them.

I like them all for diferent reasons.

Right now Im doing the Rise of Rome and Im just a tad bit behind Persia. Carthage is almost gone. Then Im going after the Celts, they just declared war on me and Im going to take advantage of that

I find them too easily beaten against the AI because it has such a poor grasp of naval tactics.

In the Pacific, I parked three CVs w/ escorts behind Wake Island waiting for a flood of ships to come out of Pearl but they never came! In fact not one transport ever left Pearl as far as I could tell (ok, maybe they snuck one to Midway) but no agressiveness at all. Switched sides and found the Japanese CVs hiding around the home islands the whole game! Really lame.

Napolean was too easy as well since England the arch enemy, has to cross the water to invade the continent and the AI simply sucks at this. Tip to get everyone on your side right away, trade Nationalism to everyone for a military alliance against the Brits, Ports and Dutch. This keeps them on their heels in the early game.

Jason Ocampo of GameSpot says about the Mesoamerica scenario, "The level of detail is so amazing, and the material is so new and fresh, that you'll often find yourself actually reading the entries in the Civolopedia to learn more about these ancient societies."

I agree wholeheartedly. This one plays with a part of the imagination that *cough cough* "American" game designers have sorely neglected.

                            And bananas.

I hope you get the chance to play this scenario over again. I have now played it several times, in single player mode; 2 player pbem; 4 player pbem and 7 player pbem...

A great combined game was The Second Coalition - 22 June 1799 ( The Second Coalition, continuation thread )
                                Here we had:
                                King Paddy III of England
Czar Pinko I of Russia & Iron Jackson Prince of the Russias
                                King Bongo II of Prussia
                                King Chrisius IV of Spain
Sultan Wittlich of the Ottoman Empire
                                Shogun Gunner of Austria
And His Excellency, Cardinal Lacey of the Vatican

This game really rocked, and we disptached old man Napoleon in short order... Then as the great houses of Europe have done for so long, we turned upon ourselves like wild beasts...

The following is a link to a diary / story of a journey through Europe from a 2 player PBEM... a lot of fun... and a few dramas

The Marechals of France was played with His Royal Highness King Chris Maximus of England as a staunch allie
