Good tips, Sir Ralph. How do you give oceans names? I hadn't thought of that before and don't know how to do it?

sorry I meant to ask what research you need to do this?
In PTW (and vanilla), you need writing, in C3C you need printing press (which now has a reason for existing)

do you need an embassy with the civ to trade the contact?
      No.
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

Pre-emptive strike is a good idea too

If you see a storm brewing, build a large force and ATTACK!!!

Also, avoid the opeat of the masses: Wonders in many cases, but especially on archipelago maps, when it's more about the military IMHO.

          Two pieces of advice:

          1) Try AU501 which features the Byzantines and a setup created by Dominae which makes for an interesting game into the modern period. [I don't think even the most accomplished players managed a pre-Industrial win or even a pre-Modern win.

          2) You can transport units great distances "instantly" by setting up ship chains (considered an exploit by some). You have ships spaced at intervals equal to their movement points, and "unload" units from the ships that have moved and "load" them onto the ships that have not yet moved. Repeat as needed. Couple that with rails and units can move from (and across) island to island to island (or across oceans of arbitrary width) using no movement points at all. Tedious MM, of course.
