Your opinion...My opinion is otherwise. The buttons that they have added since civ3 was initially released take up very little of the map.

Quite often actually - I occasionally stockpile some gold and based on my circumstances (especially if I find myself all of a sudden in an unexpected war) I mass upgrade at that point - especially since upgrading is only needed to be done when facing a war.

The point is that there are players who use the mouse more than the keyboard, and adding a graphic button to handle this apspect of the game is not a huge deal for a coder to pull off.

Based in 1.20, that isn't happening either... I guess they are saving up features for civ4.

vmxa1, do you keep all of the buttons on, the advanced unit actions, etc. They do clutter up the bottom of the screen.

Personally, I keep all the buttons visible myself. Although I have no problem using keyboard commands for such things as “upgrade all”, I rarely touch the keyboard and use the mouse as much as possible.

I think it is easier (for some reason) to use the keyboard in the beginning, but when you finish rexing, there are to many lists to deal with, so you have to use the mouse.

Maybe that could be a new feature for civ4...

I display all but the MP stuff. I should change that as I use very few of the icons.

If the game were perfect, you would be able to hide the buttons not used regularly (the worker button irrigate toward nearest city, comes to mind) and keep the ones you do use.

Not much risk of this happening...
However, I wonder if Sid would sell the game to a Society determined to preserve its glory. And maybe with access to the code could embark again on a real 'road of improvement'.

Buttons, hotkeys...I like buttons for the basic commands (irrigate, road, build city, et all), but for the advanced commands I would like them all accessable from the right-click menu, a la SMAC. I've always preferred that over cluttering buttons or having to memorize various key combos. I'm a mouse player, personally, but I don't really like having the advanced buttons visible either.

Since I play on a laptop, I pretty much have to use the mouse to move units, but otherwise I'm very much a hotkey person. Hotkeys rock!

If I could move without the mouse on my laptop, then I'd only use my mouse for diplomacy and advisor screens.

Clearly I've been using a mouse way too long to understand why anybody would prefer to use the keyboard!

I use the keys on my laptop. It can be a little... interesting at times moving diagonally without the benefit of a numeric pad. The way Home, PgUp, PgDn, and End are laid out on my keyboard is not exactly intuitive.

I use the F keys and the keyboard shortcuts extensively. It's so much faster.
