          this from gamespot

We were fortunate enough to attend a Firaxis press event at which the company's president, Jeff Briggs, and the company's chief creative director, veteran game designer Sid Meier, announced a new partnership with Atari Games (the publisher formerly known as Infogrames) to develop and publish new PC games. According to Meier, the new agreement gives Firaxis the right to revisit such classic properties as Colonization, Covert Action, Silent Service, F-15 Strike Eagle, and F-19 Stealth Fighter. Briggs and Meier went on to formally announce the next product in the Civilization series: Civilization III: Conquests, a new expansion pack for the award-winning 2001 strategy game.

Civilization III: Conquests will feature a brand-new single-player campaign that will model eight different famous historical campaigns, including the battle for Mesopotamia, the battles between the Mayans and Incans, the struggle for control of feudal Japan, and even World War II. The expansion pack will also feature a whopping eight new civilizations, as well as a great many other additions, including new military units, new diplomacy options, new government types, new wonders of the world, new victory conditions, new resources, and new luxuries. The expansion will be released later this year.

          hope this helps

I guess it's safe to say that the Inca and Maya are two of the eight new civs.

Gotta say I'm surprised about this news. I notice there's not much said about MP in the next expansion (maybe they're sticking with what they do best...no offense!).

the scenario concentration for this expansion probably means improvements to modding, time increment control, etc

btw my thoughts on the series is that it probably wont get to a sequel past Civilization 3 unless there are major changes to the game mechanics, so barring that, firaxis should focus on more expansion packs to polish the game and take care of all its problems.
                  anyone agree?

There was mention of this, indirectly, earlier:

                      BRIGGS TALKS TO `MSNBC`
(1 May 2003, 22:24 | Civ3) MSNBC reporter Tom Luftus recently filed a story with the news network entitled "Virtual Nation Building" with the byline Iraq recovery could provide inspiration for strategy games. Firaxis Games President Jeff Briggs is one of the individuals interviewed for the piece talking about the Civilization series in relation to the background behind the story.

[R]eal world events has Briggs thinking about updating the [Civ] series. Among the features: An increased role for the media and a more true-to-life world governing body. In this more realistic setting Civilization’s United Nations component would be less kumbaya, more realpolitik. More powerful members would have the power to veto or go off and wage unilateral action. [..] But will such a game matter when it’s released, two or three years down the road? Briggs is not so sure... [..]

That sounded like they were developing Civ 3 XP2. I had my hopes after reading that on the Apolyton main page almost two weeks ago.

Sounds good to me. They had two expansions to Civ2, so why not.

PTW already has time increment control. But it sounds like it's going to be possible to set diplomatic relations in a scenario.

you know I really love Civilization 3: PTW... everybody know Play The World is a little big... problematic for some reason.
MP is not fixed, scenario was shipped with some bug, and put inside folder with nothing (no text file about each scenario, nothing at all)...

But I really enjoy Play The World... this is like your girlfriend... she have many default... but there some things you really likes from her...

But I really dont want to pay for another expansion pack... and I really love the civ series... What I wanna do? I dont want to buy a expansion who will fixes MP and add some civilization. But I'm sure, if I'll buy this expansion pack, I will love it... Maybe if they change some things about the A.I. this will be fun.

I find something little paradoxal... What I wanted to hear is a new Civ4... with a whole new set of option, new A.I., new trade pact, more complexity... more and more...

But I'm sure when the Expansion will be out, I will be the first to buy the products!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

... so bad.. I'm in love with a games!!! hahahahhahaha

                            see ya everyone...

I would not expect to hear about Civ4 for at least 2 more years.
