  • ToT question

Yes, I'm trying to get back on the scenario-making horse...again. You probably don't even remember my first two finished scenarios, the one was so bad and t'other so limited in scope. I'm trying for a MAJOR ToT overhaul of the first one, with twenty-six unique units for each faction.

Anyways, does anybody know why my civilopedia is so FUBAR? Certain units won't pop up in the civilopedia. Their graphics will appear under the appropriate advance, but without the name next to them to click on, and clicking on "help" from the build menu does nothing. I started the scenario in "original game" mode since I only want one map, and I'm wondering if that has something to do with it, since a number of the recalcitrant units are from the "extra units" slots. Please tell me I don't have to restart the scenario now that I've placed most of the cities, all the tech, etc.!

Also, just out of curiosity, does anyone know what the very first of the ToT-special unit flags does? You know, the flags for impassible terrain, faux-invisibility, can't be disbanded, and such. The first flag (or last, in RP notation) isn't described in any rules.txt. Is it just a placeholder?

Glad to hear you're back in the saddle, Elok, and I'm looking forward to your scenario. The problem you're having with the civiliopedia is in the Describe.txt file in the Original game, which doesn't have space for the descriptions of the extra ToT unit slots. Use the one from the Extended game.

I think the first (last?) flag you're asking about is "override .SPR file for this unit."

Thanks, replacing the describe file did indeed work perfectly! But now I've hit a more serious roadblock: CivCity is refusing to work with not only the build file, but all ToT games. I've got a ton of "Egyptian" cities on this map, some of them with wonders, waiting to be turned into barbarians. And now I can't. Oddly enough, CivTweak works fine with ToT, but CivCity balks, saying something like "unknown version number: 49." Does anybody here have experience with such a thing, and/or know the remedy?

Do you have the VBRUN300.DLL file in the folder with the civcity.exe?

Either there or in his system32 folder; he got it to run. But did he patch the game to the latest version? CivCity is also incompatible with multi-map saved games - it's hex-editing for those. Links to the 1.1 patch can be found here: http://users.tpg.com.au/jpwbeest/jp_faq.htm#Patch. That page answers his other questions as well.

I assume/hope that the patch gets rid of TOT's inability to use certain cheat mode functions, such as "forbid tech from conquest" and altering the tech paradigm? It's on my list to get, but it's complicated; my computer is too damned old and weak to access the house's wireless connection.

ToT’s inability? Those parameters are appended to the game file only when you save as a scenario. If you want them bound to your working file, save as a scenario and then change the file extension from SCN to SAV. It’s the same for MGE.

No patch also explains why you’ve got no info on the last bit in column G of the Units Advanced table. The SPR file override was introduced with the 1.1 patch. You won’t be playing too many scenarios with version 1.0.

No, I entered a tech paradigm of 20/10, saved as scenario to test, and got an opening message telling me discoveries cost the normal rate. And no tech from conquest doesn't even register; I click it and as soon as I close the window it's unclicked again. Grrrrrr!

I just fired up an unpatched version of ToT to test and it works as I described. I doubt the patch will fix your problem; it’s not listed in the 1.1 changelog. Sounds like a problem particular to your system. Do you have MGE installed? If so, does it behave the same way?

I have FW and TOT. I'm not sure if I've ever had cause to change the tech paradigm before. I left it as-is for my first scenario, because it had a comparable number of techs to vanilla civ and covered a similar time period, and for the second I just beefed up fundamentalism's science loss to 100. Hold on--do you need to change the tech paradigm in rules.txt to match? I'll try that next, it just occurred to me. I'm all but certain that I've forbid tech from conquest before, successfully. I'll ignore the problem for the present, as I have bigger ones.

Namely, the patch is refusing to install. As soon as I try it whines that I must have TOT installed to use the patch. And, of course, I do have TOT installed, dammit! Do I need to have the patch in a certain directory? It's in TOT's right now. Sorry for all the hassle, but this game seriously has it in for me. Thanks for taking the trouble to answer my questions!

No, the one in the scenario parameters overrides it.

Try applying this registry patch, posted by Mercator, before you run the ToT patch: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=233203.

You can run the ToT patch from anywhere.

I am sure the tech paradigm setting will not really show a difference till you set up some economies for the civs.

Then you can see the subtle changes...

What do you mean by "set up economies"? Trade routes? The tech paradigm is most certainly noticeable without those; just look at the FW Dinosaurs scenario.

No prob. Presumably CivCity works on saved games now. What about the scenario parameters in the Cheat menu?
