  • Useful Thread Idea

I seem to recall an old post with this, but I could not locate it.

It might be very useful if every scenario designer (in one consolidated thread) posted links to their favorite and best (own design) scenarios so that someone quickly browsing the SLeague can find them... (Of course people can visit the website or the wiki: http://sleague.apolyton.net/index.php?title=Home, but some alas don't realize that is a good idea.)

    This is good: http://apolyton.net/forums/showthread.php?t=132502
But more commentary on the scenarios such as a top 5 list might be nice!

That sounds like a fine idea. If it catches on it may be good to have it as a sticky page!

McMonkey's scenarios: http://sleague.apolyton.net/index.ph...egory:McMonkey *Note that some are not completed yet

A few of my current favourites:

        Operation Market Garden (Techumseh): http://www.tecumseh.150m.com/OM-G/OMGmain.html
WWII battle scenario with lots of pressure. A real challenge!

        Frederick the Great (Techumseh):
        http://www.tecumseh.150m.com/FtG/Fre...the_Great.html
A fight for survival that kept me gripped throughout!

        Seize the Crown (Patient English):http://sleague.apolyton.net/index.ph...eize_the_Crown
Lots of innovative concepts and excellent for a multiplayer game.

        Bonaparte (Patient English):http://sleague.apolyton.net/index.php?title=Bonaparte
A masterpiece either in single-player or multi-player mode.

        Struggle for Empire (Carl Fritz):http://sleague.apolyton.net/index.ph...gle_for_Empire
A beautifully put together scenario, especially when played with Fairline's units.

        The Spanish Civil War (Pablostuka):http://sleague.apolyton.net/index.ph...h_Civil_War_v3
In depth portrayal of the SCW. Makes a brilliant head to head multiplayer game!

        Lost Legions (Cyrion):http://sleague.apolyton.net/index.ph...e=Lost_Legions
Historical fantasy adventure. Great concept brilliantly executed.

        Brown Man's Burden (Gothmog):http://sleague.apolyton.net/index.ph...%27s_Burden_II
Another well put together scenario that is great in either single or multiplayer modes.

        Casus Belli (Vegard Bjørketun):http://sleague.apolyton.net/index.ph...1700-1721_v2.5
An old classic that got me interested in the Great Northern War.

Of Celts and Iberians (Jesús Balsinde):http://sleague.apolyton.net/index.ph...s_and_Iberians
A good campaign set in ancient Iberia.

          DarkCloud - This is a good idea - !

A dedicated scenario directory thread could be made, and stickied...!

Who is up for helping get this together...?

it will take me some time to pick my final 5.
For the time being, off the top of my head (sorry I never had TOT so only MGE scenarios)...

The Cruel Sea - by Nick Dowling aka Case
            Odyssey - by Kull
Under Dark - by Mr Temba
Mafia or Norwegian Campaign - by Eivind
Subwars or Imperium Romanum - by Bernd Brosing aka Bebro
The LOTR trilogy by Favoured Flight
Lord of the Rings by Harlan Thompson
            Operation Herbstnebel - by DarthVeda
Red Front - by Captain Nemo and Alex Mor
Dungeon Heroes of Beckhorn - by Dr ?

Dark Cloud, I can't believe you picked my Wealth of Nations. If fact, you are the first person I know of who has actually played it. I'd consider it a work of art myself but most people will give up almost immediately. Did you mean my Rape of Nations?

I could almost swear I gave you some feedback after playing TWoN at some point. My main problem with the scenario was that, while it played brilliantly as as an economic modpack (so much original thinking and novel ideas) and civ 2 game for the start to mid-game, the scale of the scenario left the end game rather boring with little desire for me to finish. Far too many cities and too many units. Also, major problems with opponent civilizations blocking the waterways. My constructive criticism at the time (at least, the constructive criticism I thought I gave) was that it would probably play a lot better if the map were smaller and there were less cities on it.

CORRECTION. Dark Cloud, in fact, you are the SECOND person I know of who has actually played it. The first person didn't give up immediately, he gave up halfway. Sufficeth to say, no one has discovered the Easter Egg.

many thanks to Our Man for that friendly reminder.

I have often admired your Wealth of Nations scenario but I must admit that I have never played it properly. I am sure I will get round to it one of these days, but it is such an abstract concept that it would take some time to get my head around. What I'm trying to say is that for me historical scenarios are more easily accessible as they all follow the same basic fundamentals. Wealth of Nations requires the player to begin almost from scratch. It does look like a superbly detailed and well built scenario and the graphics all work very well. This certainly makes me want to put the effort into learning to play it

No problem; I didn't want you to think it had been completely forgotten! It is one of the most original civilization scenarios ever created, and great fun to play until the action on the map gets too crowded in the later game. And just because you only know two people that have given you feedback on it, that doesn't mean there aren't plenty more that gave it a spin and enjoyed it.

P.S. I presume the Easter Egg you are referring to is the one that would be in keeping with the theme of several of your other scenarios?

                      No comment. on the egg.

I don't know if I discussed this with you....as I recall myself, I I did not find the game that onerous because of my widespread use of the AI city mayors. It was obvious that fighting wasn't going to get me anywhere (since that was the way I designed it). I just fortified a few troops outside each company as a screen against diplomats and put a lot of the production into AI chosen improvements, wonders, caravans, capitalization and specialized citizens (i.e. scientists, bankers etc). I also set several settlers in every cluster on auto-infrastructure building.

Then I set down to focusing on a few key areas...research, stealing techs, inciting revolts, sabotage, airlift. Hmm maybe I'll just play another game for old times sake....

The major difference in our playing styles probably contributed to the difference in our overall level of enjoyment. I am an obsessive micromanager who makes minute adjustments every turn to maximize overall city and civilization output. Your approach would definitely make the game more fluid at later stages, but surely putting your trust in the Civ2 AI is like putting Skynet in charge of your nuclear arsenal?

                            .

I enjoyed the units, and the ideas and the design. I played for a bunch of turns, but like our_man I have not beaten the game. (Like Red Front... it can sometimes bog down with movement). (I have never used city managers... not even in Alpha Centauri- perhaps I should have utilized them.)

In fact, of all the scenarios listed, I have not defeated any of them. I like to play the games and I like to see the units and admire the interactions that the scenario designers make, but I am far too terrible a player to get very far in any of them. I like "big Ideas." Your Wealth of Nations and Cam Hill's Gangster, and the Dungeon scenario are "Big Ideas" that develop and change Civ.

Giant Squid's Clouds scenario... one of the Mike McCart Star Wars scenarios and others are works of art.

I am not someone who is very good at games, but I love trying out other people's works of art.

For example, in Cyrion's Greyhawk scenario, I have not been able to come anywhere close to winning or to surviving more than 30 turns (I think?) Even though I sunk around 15 hours into playing it.
