I think engma brings up a good point. Has anyone documented what has worked and what hasn't on getting to colonize AC? If not maybe we should all combine our previous experinces, and try to see if it's not just something totally random.

Data point: I maxxed out on everything with the ship.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Wow, a cheat game...that would have saved me a few (many) hours this weekend. I have started a game over from scratch and now am in 1778 with things just heating up. I sellected 6 civs instead of 7 thinking that having an alien already on centaurus may have been an issue (again, grasping at straws). However the Gazpichi are a civ in this game. How did that happen?? I thought you only got an alien civ if you chose 7 civs??!!

Well, that was a waste. I just toggled cheat mode and looked at my civs...there are still 7. Assuming there is some logic still left in this world, I must have hit 7 instead of 6 civs. So much for eliminating a variable from our discussion.

Enigma, are you running into this prob with less that 7 civs in your games?

Another point: Even when I had no settlers after my landing, I was able to research ultrasting? This should suggest that the patch was installed all along as I thought?!

Alright, I spent the last 15 min. cheating my butt off. My spaceship landed in 1792 AND I HAD COLONISTS!!!

As I noted above, I had seven civs including an alien race.

Here are the differences between the successful game and the unsuccessful game:

            1. When my spaceship landed in the successful game, I got a video. I did not get a video in the unsuccessful game (this could be explained by #2 below).
            2. In the successful game I was the first to land on Centaurus (it was 1792 after all). In the unsuccessful game I was first to launch my ship but not to land it.
            3. In the unsuccessful game the aliens landed on earth before any of us landed on Centaurus (we were constantly embroiled in world wars so we were technologically behind the aliens).

These are just a few observations that may represent variables which led to the failure to recieve colonists on Centaurus.

            What do you think?

I don't know if this is possible to predict. I didn't cheat in my game but I was playing on Chieftan (I know, but sometimes it's fun to be able to wipe everyone out at whim, and I'm new to Civ2). I was the first to arrive, 100% chance of success, fully built, etc. It was definitely a glitch with the settlers being named "extra ships" and walking on water.

I did play once (just for the fun of it) as the Gazpichi on AC. I launched. They landed and I had colonists--but of course it was again on AC. (Actually it would be a cool scenario for someone to make where you could invade Earth.)

Civmaniac, you weren't ignored. I apprecieated your confirmation that the patch doesn't affect saved games. I'm pretty sure though, I have had the patch installed all along. (I've switched computers a few times so I can't be 100% sure it was installed, but I did have it downloaded onto this system which would suggest I also installed it.)

Again, I appreciated your confirmation of my vague recollection.

I just played it through, I luanched a Spaceship with 100% chance of success, and 10 years later (I launched a 22-5-5-1-1-1 ship) I landed on Centauri with two colonists and two marines. Could it be you need 100%?

                    A couple other notes.
                    • I was the first to launch from Earth, and the first to land.
                    • I made it to Centauri before the Aliens landed on Earth.

I have another question. This was my first Extended game and I never bother to read the manual...

If you are beaten to AC by another civ from earth, can you begin researching Ultrastring Theory without having gotten to AC yet? I noticed that the English in my game did that, but I didn't know if the AI was just cheating or something.

Like I said before, despite being ignored:

The patch does NOT effect save games

You have to start over after you have the patch installed

                        Civmaniac -

Don't worry, we saw what you said.

I'm in the process of nearing the end of an Extended game. I have the patch installed (and I started this as a new game!), so we will see what happens. I'll be sure to note anything specific that I notice.

I know this is really late to respond, but I think I have an answer to the problem with Colonists on AC. I have been playing the advanced game for about 8 months (I don't own 'plain' CivII) and I have noticed the following:

The number of Colonists & Marines depends on the size of the ship (as stated above).

These are only potential units. The game tries to place them, but (I think) if the site is ocean/uncrossable or contains an alien unit the unit may NOT get placed. If I play with no alien civ I am more likely to get all my possible units. If AC is highly populated (like the Gazpichi tend to do), I may only get half my units.

The first 2 civs to land on AC get units. Everyone else gets nada.

Even if you don't get a colonist, you automatically get the ability to research Ultrastring Theory. From this you can win the game, either with or without settling AC.

I have never gotten one of the "ships". This may be something related to the patch, since I installed the patch right away.

My strategy is to build the biggest ship I can in order to land either first or second. It's better to land second with a complete ship (4 colonists, 4 marines) than to land first with 1 colonist & 1 marine. I've done this a few times and often the 1st civ to land (with the minimum size) ends up with no colonists.

Another strategy is to avoid building on AC entirely if the Gazpichi are there. They are a real pain. Frequently I choose my civs specifically in order to choose Brr'tlian.

Also, you may (or may not) get an alien civ with 6 civs.

                          Hope this helps.

I selected 6 Civs in my latest game, and got the Gazpichi. I played my first game with 7, and all of a suddent I was able to research ultrastring theory before I could even build an airplane. Is that normal? Does it appear randomly as an advance during the game? I thought it was weird that I could build teleporters before I could even build a fighter. Anyone else have this experience?
