  • Shouldn't be a problem. At the moment the rivers are mainly outlines. When they are all finished I will take a look at Google maps and Atlases to work out the crossing points and widen the areas that should not be passable.

The good thing about ocean river is that they can be modified later in the scenario creation process, unlike the original rivers.

    • I thought about to use some cities on the Mississippi River as bridges, like Vicksburg, Baton Rouge and Memphis for example.

      • No problems, I have already put such cities straddling the rivers. All that is required to make them bridges is a slight widening of the rivers whose course will already be mapped out. This should channel the action nicely. I think there should be some other crossing points but these could be further from road networks. Its up to you to manipulate the map to suit your design

        • Great to hear this.
I´m seeing Cottonclads and Ironclads patroulling through the River, armies marching along the Mississippi shore and cities like Vicksburg getting a real important strategic target...

          • Just finished off placing the major rivers, mountain ranges and cities. Onto the highlands next. Realised I had got Lake Huron a bit wonky so I re drew it. Now Detroit and Lake St. Clair fit perfectly.

What I need now is a list of smaller towns of strategic importance that you want to include, such as Gettysburg and Harper's Ferry. I can place them accurately with the grid still in place. Once the grid is removed it should still be possible to pinpoint things as the rivers and major cities are good reference points for getting your bearings!

            • are the orange spots cities? because back then, Florida was the smallest Confederate state population wise even though nowadays it is one of the most populous states. in the original scen Florida only had two cities, Pensacola and Jacksonville.

              Comment

              • Yes, the orange dots are the locations of modern cities. I know very little about the size and importance of cities during the Civil War but putting their names into Wikipedia. For example Tampa:

                "Tampa during the Civil War

Barracks and tents at Fort Brooke in Tampa BayDuring the American Civil War, Florida seceded along with the rest of the South to form the Confederate States of America. Fort Brooke was manned by Confederate troops, and martial law was declared in Tampa in January 1862. Tampa's city government ceased to operate for the duration of the war.[21]

In late 1861, the Union Navy set up a blockade around many southern ports to cut off the Confederacy from outside help, and several ships were stationed near the mouth of Tampa Bay. However, blockade runners based in Tampa were able to repeatedly slip through the blockade to trade cattle and citrus for needed supplies, mainly with Spanish Cuba.[22]

Trying to put a stop to this, Union gunboats sailed up Tampa Bay to bombard Fort Brooke and the surrounding city of Tampa. The Battle of Tampa on June 30 to July 1, 1862 was inconclusive, as the shells fell ineffectually, and there were no casualties on either side.[23][24]

Much more damaging to the Confederate cause was the Battle of Fort Brooke on October 17 to October 18, 1863. Two Union gunboats shelled the fort and surrounding town and landed troops, who found blockade runners hidden up the Hillsborough River, and destroyed them.[25]

The local militia mustered to intercept the Union troops, but they were able to return to their ships after a short skirmish and headed back out to sea.

The war ended in Confederate defeat in April 1865. In May 1865, federal troops arrived in Tampa to occupy the fort and the town as part of Reconstruction. They would remain until August 1869."

Although this article does not give population size it gives a good enough impression to make an educated guess. I don't mind doing this for all the cities as I really enjoy reading the history. If anyone knows of a good source of info on town and city populations during the ACW period please let me or Civ2units know

                • The cities I would like to include are Fredericksburg, Antietam, Gettysburg and Harpers Ferry for the Eastern Theatre. I thought about to make special events when capturing the cities. If I forgot some important cities, please let me know.

For the Western Theatre I´ve only two cities, Baton Rouge and Vicksburg. They should be build a bridge through the Mississippi River.

I will start with the Eastern Theatre.

                  • gives the total population of Florida at that time as 140,000. compare this to present statistics which rank Florida as 4th most populous state with 18 millions! the number 140,000 is also confirmed by the wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida...ican_Civil_War

                    • I´ve now made a list of wonders I would like to use. If someone knows additional important wonders, please let me know.

Cotton Plantage (Colossos) => only for South

Great Manitu (Oracle) => only for Cheyenne

Tredegar Iron Works (Richard´s Crusade) => build in Richmond

Norfolk Dockyards (Magellans Expedition) => build in Norfolk

The Capitol (Shakespeare Theatre) => build in Washington

Red Cross (J.S. Bachs Cathedral) => for North and South

Harvard University (Newtons College) => build in Boston

                      J. P. Morgan (Adam Smith) => for North and South

Union Pacific Railroads (Darwin) => for North and South

Thomas Edison (SETI) => for North and South

Secession! (Cure of Cancer) => build in Charleston

Morgan and Edison should be represent important persons during this period of time. So both sides will be able to "build" them.

                      • Just thought I ought to post a little update of the map. The screenshot shows the area around Richmond and Washington to give you a better idea of the scale. There is plenty of room to add cities still. The small river between Harrisonburg and Harpers Ferry is the Shenandoah valley. I am currently working on the highlands which may take some time so I hope you are OK waiting for this. I will try and get the eastern area you outlined finished first so that you can crack on with the scenario

                        • The scale looks very good, it will allow me to create and simulate the major battles in this area. Washington and Harpers Ferry will have a special strategy position
                          due of the river.
There´s no problem if I´ve to wait for the map.

                          • What? No Winchester? You can't model Virginia without having Winchester. No way. No how.

Otherwise looks very good, speaking both as a Civ fan and a historian. I think everything (else) worth noting is here.
