I have recently got back into PeG and I was wondering if you could send me these files again. I tried the files (rar) you send via e-mail but when I put them into the PeG-WWII main folder it causes the game to crash to desktop when I run the .exe.

On a separate note I cannot get the Shogun General or WWI campaigns to work which is really annoying. I have got other campaigns working and I have followed the installation instructions in detail but still nothing. The Shogun General Campaign just freezes on the first briefing screen and the WWI gameset front screen does not show any scenarios or campaigns available to play. Is there a forum I can go to to get technical advice? I'm sure there is a thriving PeG community out there but they are probably hidden under a rock somewhere like us lot

Here's the main forum Drew. Someone here will know what's up better than me:

The bloke who runs the PeG conversions forum in RobertCL; I guess he's your best bet for technical problems. We're working on a major revamp of PeG-Nap, and it would be great if you could playtest and/or perhaps even try your hand at senario design (much easier than civ2 ). Here's the PeG sub-forum:

Thanks Gareth. I have been thinking about making a small campaign as it happens. Perhaps something small like a "What if?" 1938 German Invasion of Czechoslovakia. I will join the forum and see whats what.

I would be happy to test out the Napoleonic and ACW scenarios. Your graphics are such an improvement over the generic WWII ones. I don't think it matters at all that they don't face in multiple directions as they often end up with their backs to the enemy anyway!

I should probably post these comments on the PeG forum but while they are in mind:

        - It would be great if all the maps (500+!) could be compiled into one RAR file, or even a series (say 1-50, 51-100 etc...). To download and unzip all of the maps needed is a real pain in the ass! I guess this may have been suggested before.

        - In some of the WWII files there are some inaccuracies. For example most motorized Corps artillery units can move ten hexes deploy and fire in one round like a tank. In reality these 200mm+ pieces were often transported in several pieces and took a lot of time and planning to put into action. How easy is it to alter the unit stats? Is it like amending the CivII rules file?

Careful with the maps Drew; IIRC if you have more than 200 in one version of PeG the game plays up. This should be plenty to cover any campaign (max 50 scenarios). All the latest installers have maps in them I think.

Editing stats, campaigns, scenarios etc is much easier than with civ2, thanks to the genius of Luis Guzman who has made a seriously unbelievable editor - PeG-Suite. DL it here, and you'll be able to edit unit stats and scenarios in no time:

Usefool tools for Open General turn-based strategy game.

I think I found out about the maps yesterday when I added a load of extra scenarios/maps onto the PeG game on my USB memory stick. Most of the campaigns stopped working except the French WWII one for some strange reason. Gives me an excuse to reinstall everything and play the Napoleonic Campaigns.

The editor looks ideal, downloading now!

Is there a way (tool etc...) to swap around Campaigns or is it best to keep them in backup folders and copy/paste them into the SCENARIO and MAP folders when you want to play them. I have looked on some of the PeG sites but to be honest there is a bewildering number of mods and tools and I am not sure where to begin!

I have several installs of PeG - PeG-Nap, PeG-ACW, PeG-WW2 etc. It's best not to mix and match, and disk space isn't an issue with old games.

Got you. I can just have several different folders with different names and keep the eras and gamsets separate. Thanks for clarifying that!

As a random post, I loved People's General. It was a fantastic war game with an interesting storyline and attractive graphics and its good to see that people are still playing around with it. It was the main inspiration for my Civ2 scenario Raging Dragon.

Ah, I did wonder if there was an inspiration from PeG behind Raging Dragon Case, now we know

As another random post, your recollections of PeG got me thinking, and I played a few turns of vanilla PeG for the first time in a long time. I say a few turns, but one scenario quickly turned into an evening absorbed with it. I'd forgotten what a great storyline and setting the original had, as I've been playing exclusively with significantly modified versions over the past few years.

@McMonkey: Did your problems with PeG-ww2 get resolved Drew? If there are still issues, the experts at JP's Panzers will have the answers.

Did you have a look at the new version of PeG-Nap? There's a dead easy-to-use installer with the old version, over which you'll need the new modgen (graphics) and e-file ('rules'), which I have if you want them.

                      @Fairline
I partially solved my PeG problems but I am still finding it a bit tricky to get everything working, even when I am following the instructions to the letter. I will do as you say and speak to the guys on the forums. I did not want to post there until I was sure that I was doing everything correctly, but I think I have come up against a brick wall now with a few of the Campaigns!

I have been pretty busy recently, but as it happens I have a day off today so I will download and install the Napoleonic version. I might be able to play a campaign or two on the weekend if work is quiet.

Excellent! If you want the new gfx and e-file, let me know and I'll e-mail them to you. There are a lot of new scenarios and campaigns at the PeG subforum in JP's site linked above, but the new installer is entirely self-contained and will get you going with 4 or 5 campains (c/w self-installed hassle-free maps lol!)

That would be great Gareth. I just took a look at the original Peoples General. Looks interesting. The thing I am struggling with is keeping track of all the different versions, e-files etc... What I am trying now is having separate folders on my desktop, each with their own files (IE Napoleonic folder, Peoples General Folder, WWII Pacific folder). I just go into that folder and add the e-files and campaign details and then run the .exe so the game reads from that folder. Does this make sense or is there a better way?

Also, could you possibly re-send the WWII Graphics again?

The key is to keep your installs in seperate folders, as you are doing now. Each version has it's own exe file (Nap_027e for Peg-Nap, ACW_027e for PeG-ACW etc), and it's own shortcut. Just copy each shortcut to your desktop and fire up the relevant one you want to play.

The latest gfx and e-files for PeG-Nap are not in the installer yet (they will be when we've finished them). Latest versions are available in this thread:

I worked out the problem you were having Drew. As I was speculating, the latest version of Peg_WW2 is quite a lot different to the version I have (and modded the icons for). Unfortunately this means my modgen.dat and e-files are not compatible with your version. I'll need to DL the latest version, and mod the dat file with my gfx. When I get round to doing this, I'll be sure to send you a copy.
