I remember John saying something about that Microprose had programed in (this is hard coded then) that all the colors would be reduced by a shade or so.

Since it's a BMP, try lightening up the orange to a higher gamma setting and see if that helps the brown.

Nope, that's all that I changed that would have to do with color.

BTW, Darth, I tried sending it to you twice, but it didn't work. Apparently that account doesn't exist anymore.

Ok, I just copied and pasted into a cities.bmp for a saved game. Yes the flags changed colour but they are still the same murky shade.

        What else did you alter?

Cam - have you used the flags yet, what did you find?

            Fast Eddie,

A belated 'thanks' for sending it through.

            Miner,

I found exactly as was described in Eddie's post - it's encouraging that we've been able to isolate the cities.bmp file as the one, and 'yes' you can change tribe colours...

I have 'tinkered' with all three horizontal stripes (above each flag icon) and found that the text of the city name is the colour of the top stripe, the city size box is the bottom stripe, the shield colour is a darker shade of this bottom stripe colour, and the middle stripe appears at this early point to be superfluous. I don't believe at this point that any of the pixels in the flags affect tribe colours in ToT, unlike traditional Civ2.

I have also found that it's the second column of vertical pixels in these stripes that affect the final colours - so really 'when push comes to shove' it's the top stripe, second pixel and bottom stripe, second pixel that's the key (me thinks).

Another thing is the SIZE of the shields that piss me off - you can't tell the difference between 'f' and '_' and others...
Das Wasser soll dein Spiegel sein
Erst wenn es glatt ist, wirst du sehen
                Wieviel Märchen dir noch bleibt
und um Erlösung wirst du flehen.

The water shall be your mirror
Only when it's smooth you will see
How much fairy-tale is left for you
And you will beg for deliverance.

Thanks William - if I'd read the thread more carefully I would have noted that Miner had already uncovered about half of my 'discoveries' - d-oh!

                      Damn good work!!!!!!!!!

These shield colours have been driving me up the wall.

It is just a pity that we can't do something about the dark shade to the units. Since the bottom strip governs both unit and City Size box there is always going to be a difference in shade.

I hope this is going to get submitted as a SL Tip.

Perhaps an 'update' of Dan Scheltema's existing tip on flags and colours rather than a new one may suffice? It can be found at sleague.apolyton.net/Guides/sldt_flags.shtml

Unfortunately I can't upload any files to the League (I don't have permission), so until Blackclove resurfaces, I might draft something for the Cradle site instead - or as well as; civ.cx unless someone feels keen to act on it themselves... takers? Miner? Eddie?

                              OK OK

I've written to Dan but not heard back from him. I'll do a short ToT focus for 'The Cradle' and tie it into Dan's for 'The League'. William and I are drafting a tip on another ToT feature at the moment, but it shouldn't hold up this quick tip unduly.
