I am thinking about buying Civ II - and was wondering a couple of things.
Will it run on XP?
Do I need to get any of the XP's?
Test of Time, Scenarios, Fantastic Worlds etc.
I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.
Running just fine on mine. You will want to get MGE, as all the modern scenarios run on it. There's a patch that restricts Civ II from using to much processing power, put that on your list. Also, you might want to try out Civ 2: Test of Time too. Don't let the graphics put you off, the Scenario League has plenty of fixes for that.

I have been running Civ2 on XP (Home Edition) for a couple of years with no problems.
The two most used versions are 2.42 (classic) and MGE. Avoid playing FW (Fantastic Worlds) which has serious bugs, although the scenarios may be OK. I prefer classic to MGE because you don't have to keep the disk in the drive. Patching to 2.42 is no problem, but the patch to MGE from other versions is "unofficial". I can't say anything about ToT - I don't have it.
I believe there is a pack available which includes Civ1, Civ2, Civ3 and Civ4.

MGE is the "Multiplayer Gold Edition". That and the Test of Time version are included in the Civ Chronicles pack mentioned by rjmatsleepers. It includes minor changes from the classic version, all scenarios from the Conflicts and Fantastic Worlds and, of course, multiplayer.
When I switched to XP, I only had the classic version (which I still prefer). At the time, I had trouble with the opening and wonder movies and needed to update some files relating to the video player that the game uses. No problems since.

P.S.: I've been wonder about this for some time: What does WTF mean?
So Multiplayer Gold Edition - will have to have a look to see if I can source that.
Not every company will ship to PNG.......

Civ2 will run fine on the 32bit Windows XP and Windows Vista, along with Windows 2000 and all versions of 9x. IIRC you may have problems if your XP installation is missing certain updates though don't quote me on it! Certainly it's always worked when I've tried it
Unfortunately the game won't run on 64bit versions of Windows XP and Vista as Civ2 is a 16bit program and the 16bit emulator that's built in to 32bit windows has not been recreated for the 64bit editions.
The MGE runs ok on my computer, I'm using XP professional.

The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.

Where do I find that patch? Does it work only for MGE or also for 2.42?
