Well, that's two of us John. Anyone else out there? I find it unacceptable that Microprose would produce a flawed patch and then refuse to deal with it.

Well, I'll remind the programmer about it and mention that it's showing up more frequently, but I can't make any promises.
One thing to keep in mind is that these are new features that were added in the patch; they're not really bug fixes per se. There are other ways to get rid of the sprites--though they're imperfect, I know. We tried to add convenient switches, but a patch, because of it's short schedule, doesn't really get enough testing time to make adding new features a good idea. We took a risk. If it didn't work out, I'm afraid there's no guarantee that we'll be allowed (by time constraints, I mean, not management) to fix it.

I figured out what it is. I was having the same problem too. The option to turn of the sprites simply didn't exist in the save files I was trying to use it with.
You have to start a game using the original graphics, turn off the sprites, and then save it into a directory with your altered graphics. You can't start a game from the altered graphics directory and then turn the sprites off. It just won't work.
But I did get it to work... it's pretty cool too.
