  • A question

Out of a mixture of boredom and a desire to see if I can tinker with the graphics to produce a better effect, I've been working on editing (largely by piecing together elements from the work of others) the graphics for the Lord of the One Ring scenario.

If I post this here, how would I go about that? That is, so far as crediting others and being acceptable to the original scenario designer.

It only qualifies as "my work" in the sense "I'm doing it", the actual art is borrowed almost entirely.

Thanks to all the enthusiastic Civ fans that make good scenarios, and inspire such projects.

In regards to credits, if there is a whole load of people's stuff involved - It is pointless trying to credit them all.

What to do is just to state clearly when posting that the work is tweaked from various sources.

That will cover all bases...No one here really minds, as we all share and share alike!

Posting units is public domain, unless otherwise stated.

There's not too many. I think I'll list the scenarios and creators so that those who want to do similar tinkering know what I was using.

Thanks. And thanks for your contributions to the Civ world.

On an entirely different note- but I didn't want to start a whole new thread, and it fit with a question "theme" can we recomend scenarios to be added to the Scenario League? I'd really like to recomend both the Cuban Revolt scenario and rise of the Aztecs scenario by Jesus Balsinde. They both have the unique flavor of an outside force really turning the scenario on it's head, and are quite well executed.

I have been slowly adding scenarios to the SL and will add them to the list. Of course if anyone else wants to do it then go ahead!

Go for it. And nothing wrong with using this as a thread for asking brief, not-related-to-anything questions.

Its useful to have something like that.

An IFAQ (InFrequently Asked Questions), if you will.

                Alright, I have a problem.
For some reason, the pedia that comes with the LOTOR scenario doesn't work (now that I've started editing units). Its still in the folder, but the game reverts to the default pedia. How do I fix this?

Its a minor problem, but having the neat Middle Earth pedia is fun.

Note: This only appears to apply to unit descriptions.

                  Yeah, I've got a random ? too:

In FW, does the ANYONE events tag work with diplomacy-blocking? I.E., can I keep anybody from talking to anybody else with just one event trigger rather than taking up a buttload of space? I've tried it and it seems to work reliably, but other scenarios I've looked at seem to have a variety of individual diplomacy-block triggers in addition to the universal one. Are those designers just covering their butts with the civs they most want to keep from talking, or is the ANYONE flag glitchy with diplomacy like it is with other triggers?

I don't quite understand your problem. I playtested LOTOR some time ago as kobi was developing it, and everything worked fine.

Perhaps you could amplify on "This only appears to apply to unit descriptions.". I have no idea what that is supposed to mean. I assume that you are playing MGE, that the scen used to work properly, that you have not altered the Rules file and have no illegal symbols in the folder name.

                      Correct on all scores.

Alright, what I meant was this. You go to the pedia in the game to look at a description for something.

Technology? Description as written for this scenario.
                      City improvements? Same.
                      Wonders? Same.
Units? The default pedia entry for that slot appears, not the scenario's.

I'm pretty sure its not the scenario's fault, as it only happened when I started editing. I don't believe I touched the Rules file.

My appologies for not being clear the first time.

Well, that pretty well zeroes in on the edited Units file as the source of your problems. Assuming that everything works fine if you replace the edited Units file with the one that comes with the scen, I suspect that you may have upset some part of the Civ2.exe that is real finicky about such arcane things as palettes and the number of bits needed to describe black, just black and really black.

Perhaps, if you attached the bitmap version of the faulty file, one of the resident wizards of the Artists Guild (ahoy there! . . . . fairline, curt and other renowned magicians of colors and bits) could tell you where you have used the wrong kind of crayons. I'm afraid that, as a bloodthirsty member of the Hack and Slash Gang, that is far beyond my limited understanding of anything more complicated than enemy body counts.

Well, I tried deleting and reinstalling to see if there was anything else, and no dice. Still the same issue.

                          Very annoying.

Appreciate the help you could give though. If no one else is suffering the problem, I wonder what went wrong to make it happen for me.

Yes. I've used it successfully as well (as far as I can tell).

I guess you'll have to ask those designers that seem to "cover their butts" why they're doing it...

If the unit icons are displayed correctly in the rest of the game, I don't see how that can be an issue. But if that assumption is correct?

This may sound like a retarded question, but does the original scenario actually have customised unit descriptions? The text displayed when you click the Description button is stored in describe.txt (not pedia.txt). Make sure this file is present in the scenario folder. Check the entries under @UNIT_DESCRIPTIONS.
