  • my aztec scenario development

    hi,
i have been lurking in these forums for quite a time now, but now i have begun to actually develop my own scenario. im quite interested in the mexica (aztec) civilization, so thats the topic of my scenario. i will probably name it "flowers for the gods", and it will be only playable with the aztecs.
it will start with the founding of the triple alliance and end a few years after the spanish appear. and it will end if tenochtitlan gets conquered.
im trying to emulate the tribute system with caravans, barbarian cities and invisible units i havent begun with that yet though...
to show you something here are two pictures, one of the first six cities i placed in the valley of mexico and another picture of my units.bmp (the units are mostly made from fairlines aztecs and out of scavenged parts from other units)

Great topic and welcome to the SL

      Shout if you need anything.

Do you have any plans to simulate the importance of capturing prisoners for sacrifice during combat, rather than killing them? Aside from the obvious link with human sacrifice, the capture of enemies was a Mexica soldier's route to promotion through the military orders.

thanks for the warm welcome! )
actually, what i really would love to see as tot units are warriors in coyote and tzitzimitl-suits. i just love them, especially the tzitzimitls. but i am not able to do something like that myself... i am going to attach some pictures of the suits the first is the coyote suit and the other two are the tzitzimitl suits.
i think its a bit early for icons though, i havent even chosen all technologies and city-improvements yet. (tech tree seems to be like hell for this one, i can hardly think of 20 suitable and believable technologies)
but now that you mention it, yes some people graphics of aztecs would be nice indeed...

well i thought of something. unfortunately the event.txt macrolanguge doesnt allow for individual units to be upgraded, so i plan to count the number of enemy units the player destroys every round and give bonus units to the play that get better with more defeated enemy units. so for 2 defeated enemy units you get a suit-wearer unit spawned the next round, for 3 or 4 destroyed enemy units you get an eage knight as bonus unit spawned and so on. it should work with some use of event-flags. well i hope it will work...

btw. these will be the civilizations in the scenario: mexica, tlaxcalteca, mixtecs, spaniards, maya civilization, zapotec and tarascan state. and then there will be several independent city-states (barbarians, the light-orange ones in the screenshot for example).
i am currently at the placing of all the cities and i can say, its a real pain to find good maps for this time and area...

I'd gladly have a go at the whole units set when the scenario is complete and I've finished other commitments.

Nice idea, but can you stack up multiple event triggers to produce a single outcome? A simpler idea might be based on the type of enemy killed. A Tlaxcalan peasant soldier killed would generate a 1st level suit-wearer for the Mexica, while a more senior warrior kill could generate higher-order suit wearers like Jaguar warriors and so on.

i dont know if its really possible. i thought of using the event-flags to count the units youve destroyed. so for the first unit flag 0 is set. then for the next unit, and if flag 0 is already set, flag 1 gets set and so on. and every new turn the set flags are checked and units given accordingly.
but if that doesnt work out, i will propably use what you proposed.
the important thing is, that the aztec player should be dependant on making war.

I like the diamond grid you're using in your units file.

The layout of Tenochtitlan looks well-planned. Seems like you may have the Aztecs attack the Spaniards from sea and land!

                        Welcome to the forum

I've wondered what history might've been like had Ahuitzotl or even Tlacaelel still been Hueyi Tlatoani of the Mexica when the Spanish arrived instead of Motecuhzoma. Alternate history is what makes civ so fun...
I noticed in your units.bmp the spanish only have arquebusiers for infantry units. IRC of Cortes's initial 500 men only twelve were arquebusiers. There were about thirty or so crossbowmen and two cannon. I believe some of the soldiers were pikemen but the vast majority were Rodeleros (Aragonese style sword-and-buckler infantry armed with the espada ropera, a rapier). Gareth has already made some sweet gfx with just such a unit. Just search the forum for "Carolus Invictissimus"

That's a good point Erin. I was going to suggest his helmet and clothing were mid- to late- 15th C as well. Early 15th C. conquistadores would have used burgonet, sallet and armet helmets, blackened armour (where worn) and different clothes to the guys you've used. I'll dig out my Carolus Invictissimus units and post after work today.

well thanks... i only used these because i couldnt find any other units that resembled a spanish conquistador, i think this unit i used was actually an italian mercenary or something. i havent really begun making the spanish anyway.
most of the cities have been placed by now and the tech tree is more or less done. (i will post a screenshot later, i am on linux right now and cant start tot)
about the alternate history, i have been thinking... most players will probably outright destroy the tlaxcalans to prevent them from helping the spanish later. i gave the tlaxcalan warriors a higher defense and i am thinking of giving them guerrila warfare, but i am not sure how much it will help against a determined player ^^
