Seen one Manilow, seen 'em all

    Which Manilow did you mean?

Btw, a news item of interest: "Daggy music is one way to make the hoons leave an area, because they can't stand the music," Deputy mayor Bill Saravinovski told Australian newspaper The Daily Telegraph."

That's great that you could meet!

As Techumseh wrote, we didn't think about it...

You'll have to come to the (potential) meeting next to see how good-looking we are!

And I talked with Techumseh about your deliberate "not-stopping for a drink while going through Switzerland"...

And I hope you have a nice end of stay, Tech: don't forget to go to Lucerne!

I didn't actually go through Switzerland - the train from Milan to Paris went over the French bit of the Alps.

Anyway, I'm much more social these days. Here's a (bad!) photo of Privatehudson (Neil) and myself in Liverpool, UK in May last year. I'm the one on the right. Neil was the perfect host and I had a great time meeting him. The only thing going for the photo is that it was better than the ones I deleted as soon as I took them!

Hmm, you probably know better than I do (with being the one involved and what...), but... I rather doubt it: the usual way from Milan to Paris is through the Swiss Alps, and then along Geneva lake through Lausanne and Geneva (didn't you go through Geneva?).

But as it is the french speaking part of Switzerland, and you being an Ozzie unable to spot the difference between a french-speaking Swiss and a French (especially while looking out of a train window), your (potential) mistake would be understandable!

We didn't go through any cities, and definetly not Geneva. My knowledge of that part of the world's geography is pretty poor, but I'm certain that I didn't cross into Swiss territory. The train went via Turin if that helps?

Yes it does! It appears you know your geography of the area well enough to know over which country you travel (damn! )!

Then I am forced to admit that you actually didn't cross Switzerland! And so you had a good excuse to refuse my beer offer, and I have no reason to keep on hating you...

You can still hate me anyway if you like.

It was great to meet him, he is a wonderful host and very interesting to talk to. It makes me think that a SL summit in the next year might be an idea worth reviving.

We talked about heading up to find Curt in Nantes, but the failure of the metal festival to include Barry Manilow was simply inexcusable.

We have a few more days in Swtizerland, and then home. Thanks again Vincent, for your wonderful hospitality!
It would be fun to go to a S League summit of some kind to meet these people whose scenarios I've been playing for so many years. Sadly though it's unlikely I'd be able travel to Europe any time soon

I thought it might be interesting to put together some sort of SL "directory" where we could let slip our current cities/regions of residence for the chance to meet on the way of life's little travels as Cyrion and techumseh just did.

That's a great idea! - not that I'm planning on travelling any time soon (I'm going to spend my life savings on property in the next few months - eek!).

I'm back in the True North, after a great trip. We visited Rome, Florence, Sienna, Venice, Lausanne, St. Galen, Geneva and Zurich. Plus Lake Garda and some Tuscan wineries. I couldn't make it to Lucerne this trip, Vincent. Next time!

I very much enjoyed meeting Cyrion and discussing (too briefly) our shared interests. If we could have had a few more of the gang there, it would have been even better. Leaving aside the directory idea for a moment, is there any interest in a SL summit? If so, where and when?

Speaking of returning... I've been away for almost two months myself, taking the Trans-Mongolian Express and travelling around Mongolia. No Apolytoners there I'm afraid, though I did meet someone else who was interested in both Civ2 and maps!

I might be interested in an SL meet, though only if it's within reasonable distance of where I happen to be.

                          Hi Merc

Have just been enjoying your photos of Mongolia. I have also dreamed of doing this journey but I am not sure when/if I will get around to it!

Arranging a summit sounds like a good idea but a nightmare to co-ordinate with the community spread out from Singapore to Edmondton. I am sure we could arrange some more local meetings though, IE a US/Candian summit, one for Europe. Just a case of time and money!

It looks like my wife has another teaching gig in Italy this summer (June) and has consented to take me along. I may have a few days to travel on my own while she works. Is anybody interested in organizing a small SLmeet?

I'm up for that. Would depend on where it is and when of course, but in principle it sounds like a good plan!

I know the lads at Civ Webring (the German site) have had get togethers before but it is much easier as they are mostly in one country.

                              EDIT:
I think the wife and kids are going to Euro Disney in June (I think its June) so if I have some time off work I might be able to go for a little Euro drive. Not sure I could make it all the way down to Italy but if enough of us could find a convenient central point, say in mid France, we could sort something out!

I'd love to, but I have no funds to leave the land of rain and haggis.
