I used to have a utility which stripped the alpha transparency channel from pngs, but this was lost with my last computer self-destruction. The problem is that IE didn't used to support the png transparency channel, and they appeared darker when viewed through IE; nothing to do with compression loss btw. I think that the latest versions of IE don't have this problem (?). Don't know as I use Opera these days.
I guess I still post bmps out of habit. I'll look at PNG gauntlet.
