  • Upgrading Civ2 classic to MGE

OK, I am now officially *totally* confused about this process.

As I understand it, it's possible to upgrade Civ2 v2.42 Classic (which I have) to the Multiplayer Gold Edition. This is a nontrivial process.

The first thing is that I hear there were 3 different patches released; US, German, and UK. I have the UK version of Civ2 Classic, and I suspect the US version is more common.

What problems occur if you try to use the US patch with the UK classic version?

The next thing is trying to find the darn patches. This site seems to say that the UK version of the patch is called UCC, whatever that stands for, and doesn't even mention a German version, just a non-English version. Whatsmore, the download link for the patch is broken.

So then I found this site. It appears to offer the upgrade patch for download, but doesn't say whether it's the US, UK, or German version. Whatsmore, when I try to install it over my current version, it does sort of work, but I don't get the 'tons of extra scenarios' that apparently there are supposed to be. Where are my extra scenarios?

As if that weren't confusing enough, then there's the issue of Civ2 MGE version 1.3. Why is this needed, as it seems to work pretty well without this patch.

Could someone just clear this whole issue up for me? I'd like to get all 3 (US, UK, and German) upgrades to the MGE, just so I can archive them, but I'd settle for downloads for the UK and US versions. Also, is there going to be a major problem installing the US upgrade on top of the UK version? I have a bunch more questions, but I'll stop here for now. I have been searching the web but it's all very confusing.

    *sighhh*

I have no idea whether the upgrade patch requires a specific version of Civ2.

But why not make a duplicate install of Civ2, and install the patch over that? If it doesn't work, you can delete it all and presumably will have lost nothing.

You're confusing a few things, jez.

There were two different releases of multiplayer for Civ2, a stand-alone version and an add-on. The stand-alone version included all the scenarios from the previous add-ons, "Conflicts in Civilization" and "Fantastic Worlds", and was called MGE in the US and UCC (= Ultimate Civilization II Classic Collection) in Europe. These different releases got official patches to fix bugs etc. Those are the patches you saw on Apolyton.

There were several patches for these. The last one was v1.3, and I think it only came in 2 versions: one for the add-on version and one for all stand-alone versions (both UCC and MGE and whichever language).

... But none of that matters to you. Those patches will only do anything if you actually bought one of these versions.

The only way to get all of the MGE content is to buy it.

Upgrading classic to MGE is done through an unofficial upgrade (the one you found on CFC) made by Cedric Greene. This does not contain any of the scenarios. It only upgrades the Civ2 engine, so to speak, turning classic into MGE so you can play multiplayer and play most of the Civ2 scenarios available online.

It turns your classic installatio into a fully patched MGE, so you don't need to install the official MGE patch anymore.

This unofficial upgrade is of questionable legality, but seems to be condoned by company officials.

Since that upgrade is unofficial, and made by an American, there is only one version of it, namely the US one.

Brother Mercator has given you the scoop in his excellent post. And while his answer implicitly answers your situation, maybe it would help to draw a bright line here. Your confusion stems from misinformation. There is no way to "upgrade Civ2 v2.42 Classic (which I have) to the Multiplayer Gold Edition", at least not legally. Cedric's patch (with all its scary warnings ) has stood the test of time, but it is not an upgrade. It is a hack (just being real).

Go to ebay or Amazon and spend a few bucks. I've seen a new unopened original box of the game for less than $10. Buy your own and then some night when it is "suddenly" 3am because of "just one more turn," you can have a good laugh about how hard you tried to make this.

        It will be worth it.

Just download it for free, makes no sense to me to buy a 10yo computergame.

Think I have it figured out now, anyway. In my collection, I have 1) the upgrade from classic to 2.42, 2) the hack to MGE, and 3) the MGE noCD hack.

This way I can still play the classic ver and copy the dir and apply the hack to get MGE. Thanks for the help.
