  • For the hex-grognards

Thanks gents. It's nice to know that I can get good advice on obscure topics from you. Saves a lot of surfing.

This unit counter sheet is fairly accurate, although it covers Malaya and Singapore as well as CBI (click image to zoom).

    • Hmm, I notice that that counter sheet gives the Australian 8th Division the same basic strength as other British Divisions. As the 8th only consisted of two brigades this isn't accurate so you might need to dig a little bit deeper when setting up your OOBs (the 8th Division's third brigade was split into three seperate battalions which were deployed to different parts of the Netherlands East Indies and Rabaul, where they were swiftly destroyed by much larger Japanese forces)

      • Good catch. The counters also use standardized movement factors that don't reflect such oddities as Indian light divs. I've mostly pieced together a brigade level OOB, but I don't have all the dates yet. When I do, I'll pass it your way.

[Edit] I'm using a combination of books and online resources. Allen's tome, and some Osprey titles give brigade level OOB's. Then, I get a list of subordinate units for these brigades from the artillery link above and World War II Orders of Battle. This latter link is particularly useful for the following feature:

It is possible, using the Unit Index Page, to list all Units of a specific Service, Type and Size for a specific Country and then drill-down to a specific Unit using the Unit Index page. Once in a Unit listing, the user can see Unit History, Subordinate Units, Superior Units, Theatres served, Commanders, Locations, Battle Honours, Notes and Orders of Battle. It is then possible to drill-down to see information for associated Units or Commanders or generate an Order of Battle for that unit for a specif date.
Any comments on the site's accuracy? The list of sources is impressive. [/Edit]

Not sure I can simulate all of it. 17th Indian is particularly tricky. It switched brigade counts and TOE at least three times during the war. The last one involved a switch from a light div to a motorized (2/3) / airmobile (1/3) one, which required the dismantling of the 11 E African div for its transport.

While I find that site really hard to navigate and haven't used it much, I've never found anything wrong with it when I have used it. I just fiddled around with some obscure Australian formations and they look accurate. It seems that when the creator of the site didn't have information on the make-up of a unit they've left it blank, so I'd treat it as a reliable source, whose current ommissions are likely to understate rather than overstate the size of forces (which I consider to be a good thing in an OOB).

          • Case, I ordered the book you recommended.

Map is only about 20% complete.
