  • The Balkans Wars

About four years ago I started a scenario on the Balkans wars focusing especially on the 1912-13 and WWI.

I got to a quite advanced stage in development and got stuck with the tech tree trying to make nationally unique units and I got diverted and have not done anything more to it since.

I was just talking to Varwnos about his excellent Balkans cities and thought I would take a look expecting to see some shoddy early work but I was surprised to see a fairly nice looking map with all the units in place, the playable nations science rates all balanced up and all the units stats done.

All that is needed it to finish the tech tree and create some events + do a bit of playtesting.

To be honest I had thought about starting from scratch on this project at some future date but it seems like it would work quite well, especially as a PBEM game!

I have posted a few screenshots to give an impression of what the game is about. I think it would work well as a scenario as the main playable nations: Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia and Rumania are all quite balanced!

      Serbia

      PLAYABLE

Serbia stood to gain a lot from the Ottomans decline but she was not alone in her desire for territory. Much of Kossovo fell into the Serbs hands as well as Novi Pazar. To the south lay Macedonia and the glittering prizes of Skopje, Monastir and Salonika and who knows, maybe Constantinople itself. Can the sucsessors of Stephan Dushan succeed in uniting the Balkans?

        Greece

        PLAYABLE

After their long struggle to free their homeland from Ottoman oppression the Greeks were looking for security but also to gain territory from the ailing Ottoman state. As well as the Aegean islands ambitious Greeks dreamed of a return to the glory days of Hellenic culture.

To the north in Epirus was the fortress town of Janina and in Macedonia the great prize of Salonika, the finest port in the Balkans. To the east the greatest prizes of all, Adrianople and the great city of Constantinople once home to the Byzantine Emperors. In Anatolia too the city of Smyrna was home to many greeks and they dreamed of one day being part of an Aegean Greek Kingdom!

          Hey Werd

You should edit asia minor a bit, since it is currently way too fat in its southern part, which in your map should be sea

            Bulgaria

            PLAYABLE

The Bulgars had once ruled the Balkans before being broken by the Byzantine Emperors. They had clung onto their homeland through their long history and maintained their identity. Liberation by their Russian bretheren had come at last and now the time is ripe for them to have their revenge on their former oppressors.

To the west Macedonia with the holy cities of Monastir and Skopje and south of them Salonika, the jewel in the crown. The Bulgars will not be the only people attempting to sieze these prizes.
South of the Balkans mountains lie Adrianople, last bastion before the ultimate prize of Constantinople.
The Bulgars must remain vigilant of their northern neighbours lest they attempt to come in by the back door while Bulgar attention is elsewhere!

There are a few things I will do to the map once I get a chance. I drew this one by eye so there are a few wonky bits. I could not be bothered to do it all again as I dont think the mistakes will affect the gameplay too badly

I will see how your cities look on this map!

                Rumania

                PLAYABLE

The Rumanians are furthest from any potential gain from the Ottoman inheritance. The opportunity to extend their defences on the Danube may be an option. The real long term goal of the Rumanians is to liberate their brothrs in Transylvania from the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
To the east many Rumanians live under foreign rule in Arad, Oradea and Timisoara. However any rash move against the Austrians is likely to cost the Rumanians dear, for now they must bide their time and wait for an opportunity.

                  The Ottoman Empire

                  PLAYABLE BUT EASY

The once mighty Ottoman Empire is a shadow of its former self but still holds extensive territories in the Balkans. Their situation is perilous with enemies on all fronts including the Austro-Hungarian Empire that recently aquired Bosnia, a former Ottoman territory.

Can the Ottomans hold out in their fortified cities such as Scutari, Janina and Adrianople and retain the vital cities such as Durazzo, Salonika and Skopje in Macedonia. Suddenly the frontiers do not seem so far from Constantinople!

                    Austro-Hungarian Empire

                    TOO EASY FOR PLAYING

The Austrians and their Hungarian partners look to extend their frontiers where they can at the expanse of the declining Ottomans, their enemy of old. They care little for the ambitions of the peoples of the Balkans whoi they regard as bandits. This arrogance may cost them deer one day when events beyond their control take over their destiny.

                      Entente and Russia

                      INCLUDED FOR EVENTS

The Entente nations of the Great War and the Russians are not intended to be playable but will play a part in the later stages of the scenario. I think you can probably guess what!

Oh, and the Germans will show up too!

I do not intend to put a huge amount of effort into this until my Vietnam scenario is complete. As you can tell this is for MGE but I think its potential as a PBEM game are good. It seems a lot of wasted effort to just leave it languishing on my hard drive so I thought I would give it an airing and see what Ideas people come up with!

And Italy to complete the set.

                          Destroy al RR

BTW when I get round to sorting out this scenario the first thing to do is send out teams of saboteurs to rip up all the Railroads, those unholy contraptions of early industrial teleportation!

I think that on your map you already have Dobrudja under romanian control (2 cities) which only happened after the second balkan war (dobrudja was signed over to romania)
