If I set an alliance with the cheat menu this can be broken if diplomacy is allowed right?

If diplomacy is disabled than all diplomacy settings are frozen in place, is that correct?

I thought hex-editing would hardwire some diplomatic relations while leaving others open to the normal manipulation by the AI and player.

I think I have got the wrong end of the stick with hex editing.

If I am not making sense then it is probably due to the bottle of strong west country cider I have just polished off (I would have added a little booze related smiley here but there are none / on the German site there are about three, we need to catch up!)

P.S. I did have your e-mail but I think I lost it when my old PC crashed. I do not appear to have written it down.

Yes. The cheat menu only sets the starting positions for diplomatic relations.

No. An alliance can't be broken without talking, except by spies causing a breach. However, a civ at peace will sneak attack you even if you can't talk. Once at war, you cannot make peace without talking.

The armies and navies have all been placed. There are still loose ends to tie up and no events have been created yet.
I am looking for an enthusiastic playtester to help me do a very early test for each nation to pick up on any major bugs and to work out if any stats need tweaking and what sort of events will be needed to make the game challenging and so on...

        One volunteer should do it

Sorry, but I didn't check my e-mail until yesterday . . . . too busy playing John Petroski's UP THE DEADLY BOOT (a pushover ) and ANSTEIG (tricky but winnable ).

I had some difficulty in figuring out exactly what you wanted from me when I received the following request

The hex editing I was looking for was:

Entente - Permanent peace with all nations
Austria - Permanent peace with all nations
Romania - Permanent peace with Entente and Austria
Ottomans - Permanent peace with Entente and Austria

This will leave the rest to make and break alliances at will!
              1. There was both a .sav and a .scn file in the zip. Which one did you want edited?
              2. There is no Entente civ in the game files.
              3. I do not understand what you want for Austria and the Entente.

              A. If you want mutual alliances with all other civs (symmetric relationships) then I suggest that you use

              CHEAT/EDIT KING/ SELECT CIV/EDIT TREATIES/SELECT WITH WHICH CIV/SET PARAMETERS

to make Austria and the Entente allied with all other civs. If you do that, then Romania and the Ottomans will automatically be allied to Austria and the Entente and require no additional editing. Symmetric relationships do not need hexediting.

              B. If you want Austria and the Entente to be allied to all other civs but the other civs not necessarily allied in to them (asymmetric relationships) then hexediting is needed but you need to specify all asymmetries. This is where hexediting is useful.
Excerpts from the Manual of the Civilization Fanatic :

Money can buy happiness, just raise the luxury rate to 50%.
Money is not the root of all evil, it is the root of great empires.

Thanks for taking a look Agri

I think I may have misunderstood the nature of hex editing. What I was looking for was not so much asymmetric as locked in place for certain civs while others were free to do whatever they liked.

I think I can sort it out by using several events banning the Austrians and Entente from negotiations!

                Re: 2
In the game it says Allies but I intend to change the civ name to Entente. Forgot to mention it

I have been working the dreaded early shift at work for the past two weeks and have been too mentally and physically tired to do much work on the Balkan Wars, though I have been thinking about it a lot!

Starting this week I have a few weeks of annual leave and then three weeks paternity leave, so I should get back on the case in between changing nappies!

I have spent most of my spare time on PBEMs (Aeterna Civitas/Bonaparte/Hellas/BK1936) which are all a blast. I have also been playing Rome Total War Barbarian Invasion which is a very challenging game and the closest I have found to Civ in the satisfaction stakes though it lacks that spark of brilliance that CivII undoubtedly has!

If you do take a look at the game (Balkan), which is in a very early state, and have any comments then let me know

                    • On my XP PC, it's in C:\RECYCLER, but I can only see it if in Explorer I click Tools|Folder Options, select the view folder and click show hidden files and folders.

                      • Horay!

Found my recycle bin. I had to tick a box in a section called 'Desktop Icon Options' which I found at random. Just goes to prove anything is possible.

This had really perplexed me. I thought deleting the recycle bin would have some cataclysmic effect like the splitting of the atom! I mean where does it go?

Don't worry though the universe is safe...for now

I should be able to restart work on this project in over the next few weeks! Looking forward to sleeping late and lazing around playing about with Civ. You never know, the sun may even make an appearance in dear old blighty

                          • Thats not a problem mate. I have been too tired due to working early to do any work for the past few weeks so I have not been waiting

Now I have quite a lot of time off so I can get on with this project. If you do get the time to have a go they PM me your e-mail address and I will send you the files, if you are too busy don't worry, Civ can wait!

First thing I need to do is make sure the unit stats are balanced. Next I will test each nation and work out what events are needed to make the Ottomans a challenge. When I have polished it all up I will post the files for a general Alpha test.

                            Watch this space!

                            • Oh Oh! I have a wee problem. I have come to my parents house for the next five days. As I am involved in several PBEM's I took my CivII disk and the scenario files on a USB stick. They have broadband and a laptop. All would seem in order but heres the problem. They do not have a USB connector mouse. The mouse they have has no prt to connect to.
I need to know if there is a way to move diagonaly on a laptop keyboard. At the moment I can only move left, right, up and down but not to the diagonal. Alternatively how do you move the units using one of those awful touch pad mouse thingys that are built into the laptop?

                              HELP!

                              • You can move diagonaly with the numeric keyboard (7 for the left up, etc...)
