Say Exile, I have a quick question about that flag request you made a little while back. Just to be sure, are these "flags" actual standards or banners that are hung horizontally or modern flags that fly perpendicular on a vertical pole?

I would imagine they would be the horizontally hung kind but wanted to be sure regardless.

      Well . . . . .

The reality is that I've never seen either flag or banner for these groups. AFAIK, they one-and-all thought of themselves as "Romans," in the sense of continuation of Roman authority. Barbarian leaders sought acknowledgement and titles from Constantinople. I don't know that any of them actually had such accoutrements.

      For the scenario, we do.

Unless anyone else has more info on this, feel free to do what you think best. If you're going to go with banners, just keep in mind that they need to be prominent so they can be seen easily by the players.

        Exile

The concept for this scenario is very refreshing. It will be interesting to be on the defensive, plugging gaps and making decisions on where to hold at all costs and where to sacrifice. Can't wait!

In some ways it is similar in concept to what I am trying to do in mt Nam scenario with Vietnamization and the US withdrawal. At the moment I have no idea how it will all play out but I would like to see the Communists win unless the player plays exceptionally well. At the moment the VC/NVA units have high stats and they act very aggressively!

I like your idea of the other nations building up their Kingdoms in an attempt to emulate the Romans. Also I have seen many good late Roman units by Fairline but have never seen them used in a game!

Go with banners for this period. The gothic cross was certainly used by the Ostrogoths post-conversion, so you could get away with using it for the migration period.

Attached below Exile is the first version of the flagset I had promised a little while back. I say "first version" because my knowledge on flags and banners of that is pretty limited so there may be some historical mix-ups on my part.

For instance, I found a source that said that banners featuring multiple "Fleur de Lis" were in existence by the late 400's AD, that seems a little early to me so I may have read the information wrong. Also, I found an obscure German website that claimed to have a design of a flag used by Attila the Hun, since it was the only site where I found such a design I'm sure of its authenticity, but I included it none the less. In both these cases I added a more basic version of the respected banner to be on the safe side.

If you have any other questions, comments or concerns please let me know and I'll see what I can do.

I think you're right about fleu-de-lys, Saarstock: 400 AD is too early... There would be the "Oriflamme" (golden star in red banner), in Clovis age (481-511)... I don't know if Franks had a 'tribal' colour... maybe the blue ? (without fleurdelys )

I agree with your Sassanids, Goths 2, Huns 1
About Vandals, I don't know her 'heraldry'...

              keep on, good work
"Dilexi iustitiam, odivi iniquitatem, propterea morior in exilio" [PAPA GREGORIUS VII +1085] - ("He amado la justicia, he odiado la iniquidad, por eso muero en exilio") - ("I loved justice, I hated unfairness, that's why I die in exile") - (J'ai aimé la justice, j'ai détesté l'iniquité, c'est pourquoi je meurs en exil") - ("Ich liebte Gerechtigkeit und hasste Ungerechtigkeit, deshalb sterbe ich im Exil")

Horse tails should be enough to represent an Hun flag.

Even if there's no mention of it in roman sources, later nomadic peoples used it as "insignia" for their military units modelled on the Achaemenid ripartition in 10, 100 and 10000 men ( the so-called tumen from Orhon and Selenga inscriptions ).

For Sassanians, i must see my Osprey collections - currently i have four books on them, something interesting might come out.

I have also "Adrianople", from Osprey Battles series, and two books on Late Roman Infantrymen and Cavalrymen, as well as Late germanic warrior, from Osprey Elite series.

You have just to ask, and my scanner will move.

                  These are excellent.

                  Superb work.

I'll put 'em in right away.

Well Gagliaudo I admit I didn't have much to go on for the Vandal herald, I roughly based it off of a painting referenced on Wikipedia on Vandals and their history.

Turno by all means if you think you have a more accurate depiction of a Sassanian standard by all means share it and I'll see what I can do.

I imagined there might be some needed revisions to the banners, hence why I called the file "v1.0".

On an unrelated note Exile, do you have a rough release date in mind for this?

                      No earthly idea . . . .

I'm testing it now though. Changing things around. Still making sizeable changes. Could be a few weeks.

For those who are interested, the latest version has a new, high-octane barbarian generation regime.

                      great fun.

Round two. Source books from Osprey and Montvert publications. Best selection from four books.

I'll research more for Huns' heraldry tomorrow. I have to check five books to do this...

PS if you need an help for that "draco" insignia try searching on the net for Sarmathians' heraldry. There must be pretty much samples, so use Google + images.

Turno, I tried to look at those .rar files the other day but wasn't able to open them. Is there another file format you could possible post them in?
