  • NEW Rome 281 B.C. - 400 A.D.

    Hello Ancients of Apolyton

I started work on a new Ancient Rome scenario at the end of last year after I had finished work on WWII Europa. Up until now I have been hosting a thread at CFC:http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=198845 which has been quite lively and has been throwing up quite a few ideas. I am going to run both threads at once to get as much input as I can and also coz I'm a cocky swine!

At the moment I have the map ready (same was WWII) and have selected the nations, placed the initial cities (although more can be added) and worked out which units to use (again this can be changed). The tech tree is almost completed. Events are just notes and ideas so far. What I am realy looking for is input from the community to inspire me to get this done. As ever though, I make the games to play myself so will carry on whatever.

I have pasted a copy of the the first page entry of the CFC thread as it is pretty much what I want to say about the game:

I have started working on a new scenario covering the rise of Rome. It starts in the year 281 B.C. with Rome as an emerging regional power about to face the Greek general Pyrrhus of Epirus (and his elephants) in southern Italy.
I plan to cover the rise of Rome, the change over to Empire and the eventual downfall of the Western Roman empire.
The map I am using is a slightly modified version of the one I used for my WWII Europa scenario (32,000sq), without the eastern USA!
The playable nations are ROME (intended for human), CARTHAGE (including Levant), PTOLEMIC GREEKS (in Egypt/Cyprus and Rhodes), SELEUCID GREEKS (in Middle east and Asia minor. Also represent Parthians and Sassanids later in game), MACEDONIAN GREEKS (including southern Italy, Crete, Black Sea, eastern Sicily, Massalia and western Anatolia), CELTS (Gauls, Celtiberians, Senones, Ligurians, Britons) and BARBARIANS (Germanics, Latins, Samnites, Dacians, Skythians, Sarmatians and later Huns and Slavs). Also there are several INDEPENDENT cities such as Numantia, Narbo etc...

Once again I have borrowed the best graphics I could find, mostly from Fairline (genius!).

One idea I have had to aid gameplay and historical realism is to place enamy towns where Roman cities were later located. I then named these enemy towns after the local tribe. This means that the Roman player has to fight real Celtic and Germanic tribes. When the Roman player captures that tribes city then it can be renamed to the historical Roman name giving the game a touch or realism.

If you have any ideas or suggestions please let me know.

Excellent - this, HT's Rome scenario and EZRhino's Bronze Age scenario all in the offing is great news

Will you be using batch file and multiple units files to allow progression through the centuries?

As an aside, I see you're using my old and crappy ancient units. I have much newer and hopefully better gfx if you want to use 'em.

It seems like an interesting time to be making an Ancient scenario. They must be like buses!

I am going to work out how to use batch files for this and version2 of WWIIEuro and will deffinately be using multiple unit files, both to chart progression in appearance and capabilities and also to help the AI keep challenging the player as the Roman Empire grows!

Re: Old units. I actully realy like the older units, especially the Romans! I think I will keep using them if you don't mind. I intend to use some of your newer 'Romes enemies' and have already earmarked the Dacian Falxman and Iberian warrior to replace tho ones I had. Thats if they are not reserved for Harrys game!

At the moment I think I have pleanty of units to be going on with but if I need any specific ones could I bother you?

I have not finalised my units list yet but am getting close to decision point. I will list them below so any late suggestions can be considered.

        Seleucids

Later on the Seleucid Greeks become the Parthians and then the Sassanids. I suppose it is no possible to change the tribes name as the game goes on but the graphics will evolve to give the Seleucids a more Persian feel later on. Any suggestions on alternative names welcome.

        Seleucid Units:
Seleucid Phalanx (Defensive foot from start of game)
Seleucid Legion (Offensive foot Later on in game)
Levantine Archer (Also Roman mercinary through event)
Seleucid Horse (Light horse, Parthian Horse Archers later on)
Seleucid Cavalry (And later Sassanid armoured cavalry)
Armenian Cavalry (Through events, later (event) taken over by Romans when they occupy Armenia)

I will also add some Elephants through Events.

            Nice one Boco
These links are top notch. The info will deffinately improve my text events and I am thinking about renaming a few of the units. I realy like the Argyraspides veterans and will think of a way of getting Foederatii into the later game.
            Cheers

              Ptolemic Greeks

              Ptolemic Units:

              Ptolemic Phalanx
              Nubian Warrior
              Arab Horse
              Camel Warrior
Plus Elephants through events and other Skirmishers. I would really like to expand this faction a bit!

                Macedonians

                Macedonian Units:

Macedonian Phalanx (Possibly called Argyraspiades or Veterans)
Companion Cavalry (Possibly called Sarissaphoroi or Lance armed cavalry)
                Hellenic Psiloi

                Also possibly:
Hypaspist (Hinge between Pike and Horse *Thanks Boco)
Diadochi (Sucessor general, I did have one but he was lost along the way, may just make a generic general!)

Will also add some Elephants and Siege weapons through events.

                  Celts

                  Celtic Units:

                  Celtic General
                  Celtic Warrior (Defensive)
                  Celtic Warband (Offensive)
                  Celtiberian Warrior
                  Celtic Cavalry
                  Celtic Chariot

For the purposes off this scenario I am calling these Ancient Celts rather than Gauls or any of the other names they may have been know by. This is purely a personal preference, I am willing to consider any learned reasons why I would be better off using an alternative name for them. And that applies to all of the tribes!

                    Carthaginians

                    Carthaginian General (Hannibal)
                    Sacred Band (Citizens)
                    African Foot (Libyans etc...)
                    Spainish Scutarii
                    Numidian Horse
                    Carthaginian Cavalry (Nobility)

I will also create Celtiberians and Elephants through events. Carthage will also be designed to be a great sea power (obviously)

                      Barbarians

                      Barbarian Units:

                      Germanic Warrior (Defensive)
                      Germanic Warband (Offensive)
                      Dacian Warrior (Defensive)
                      Dacian Falxman (Offensive)
                      Skythian Foot (Archers)
Skythian Horse (Horse Archers and later on Huns) Sarmatian Cavalry (Heavy Cavalry)
                      Thracian Peltast (Tough skirmisher)

Many of these will only be produced by events in specific areas. I suppose I will use the Germans as the default Barbarian unit.
I would also appreciate peoples thoughts on the name of this tribe. Calling them barbarians gets confusing as there will still be actual Barbarians appearing. Would calling them Germans be OK or is there a better more generic alternative?

                        Romans

                        Roman Units:

                        Roman General
Legion Ensign (Non combat prestiege, organization unit)
                        Velite (Skirmisher)
                        Cohort
                        Auxiliary
Engineer (Other option is to make Cohort a settler?)
Roman Cavalry (Stats improve later in game)
Pretorian Guard (Not 100% sure if they are nesassary)

                        All fairly standard

                            Progress

Tech tree is now complete (despite my dabblings in about four other projects). I manage to get a lot of the boring rules work done at work leaving me more time to work on the game when I get home.
Depending on how many distractions I am subjected too this game should be ready in late Februrary or early April, I hope

                              Pause

My attention has been temporarily diverted
I am working on a remake of an old Vietnam scenario I started a few years back. This does not mean my enthusiasm for this scenario is spent. On the contary I think it has huge potential (bighead) and really want to get to the playtest stage which is not too far off now!
I do like to have a few things on the go at once though, I find it helps keep the creative juices flowing, no doubt I will get to a tricky point in the Nam development and suddenly this project will recieve my full attention, the WWII scenario was only completed after a lengthy pause!
Please keep posting your thoughts as I will keep work going at a reduced pace until I am enthused again!
                              Thanks
