  • Early playtester needed

Right then. The game is almost ready. I have quite a few loose ends to tie up but it is playable now. The tech tree is done and the events. I am adding sounds and am about to start play-testing. I need to make sure the trade and strategic bombing work with the economic model and will probably need to tweak a few things.

What I am looking for is someone to do a preliminary play-test. Don't need them to play all the way through. Just need to hunt any bugs, get comments on how the units stats work and ideas for alterations and extra/alternative events.

This version is for ToT. Would anyone like to help me out?

      • Thanks Ghost. Agricola did an extensive playtest of the MGE version so I know most of the major problems. If you could have a go and let me know your views it would be much appreciated. I will e-mail you the files asap.

Have e-mailed you the scenario files. Hope it works and I have not forgotten anything. The game still needs a lot of polish but it should play OK. I really need feedback now to get this out!

Please feel free to post any queries/bugs/ideas here!

            Thanks for helping out

In your Opsum you mentioned pre-charged engineers several times. What exactly does this mean? Is it a cunning way of making them work faster?

              • Is it a cunning way of making them work faster?
Not quite. It is a cunning way to keep the lazy beggars from wasting their time.

Engineers doing a task [building a road, irrigating, transforming, etc.] accumulate 'charges' at the rate of 2 per turn. Settlers accumulate 1 per turn. When a unit or a stack of units doing the same task have accumulated enough 'charges', the task is completed.

If a single unit carries out the work, the process is simple. During each turn of building/transforming, the unit earns 2 points. When the point total reaches or exceeds the number required to complete a particular task, the task is finished, the icon for the square is changed, the point total is reset to 0 and the unit becomes available for the next task.

However, if the unit is activated before it completes a task, it retains its accumulated points so that they will count towards its next task. This is the basis of creating the “pre-charged” engineers/settlers that players can use to their advantage.

In the simplest case, to precharge an Engineer, put it to work on something that it cannot accomplish immediately. Then click on it. It will no longer be doing the task, it will be immobile, but it will have accumulated 2 'charges'. When it becomes active at the start of the next turn, it will have 2 'charges' and, if ordered to carry out a task that normally takes an Engineer 2 turns or 4 'charges' [RR, fortress, etc] it will accomplish it immediately.

For more details, you may want to check the following threads.

Some one in the Destroyer poll thread mentioned using 'precharged engineers'. What is this and how do you do it? Thanks, Richard:confused:

There have been recurring discussions about the optimum number of Engineers to use for building terrain improvements and for transforming terrain. I think that this information answers any remaining questions for MGE. CAUTIONARY NOTE: Easy acquisition of the data for this summary was...

                    All smart ideas welcome!

Have ground attack planes function as the normal fighters in vannila civ2(attacking multiple times per turn, but must end their turn at an airport), and have your fighter planes function as the bombers of vannila civ2 attacking once per turn, but needing not end their turn at an airport. Would provide more info at what values exactly you need to change in the rules.txt, if only i could remember.

That makes sense. The a/c are the only units whose stats I have not changed yet. I remember spending ages working out ranges and attack strengths to make sure they were useful but not all powerful. I think I need to test them all again to see how they preform against the rest of the units revised statistics.

Bombers vs Factories will also be an interesting balance. I want to make it hard for bomber command!

                      • As Ghost of Disco appears to be having some virtual PC problems I was wondering if anyone else would like to help me out with testing and feedback on this project.

I have started a full play-test but I would like someone else's opinion. It is easy to get caught up in your own world and miss some very obvious points!

Not looking for a thorough test, just a once over and some ideas to help in the last push to get this released

                        • I'd love to try it, but not for ~12 days or so.

We snowbirds start our annual northward migration in 6 days: 2 relaxing days on Interstate 75, 2 nights in Toronto and at least 2 days to get to the lake and activate systems that have been shut down and frozen for 6 months.

Talk about contrasts. It's already bloody hot down here but in Canada the leaves won't even be out when we get home. However, Florida is no place to be in the summer . . . . torrid heat and oppressive humidity. I'm amazed that the Spanish and subsequent inhabitants managed to survive and even thrive without air conditioning.

If my schedule is too slow for you, perhaps someone else can give it a go.

                          • Much appreciated Agricola. I can certainly wait as I have more work to do on the game as well as my own play-test.

I have ironed out the problems you highlighted in the MGE version and added a fair bit.

I would not necessarily need such a thorough play-test this time (unless you really want to). Just need a bit of feedback to spur me on!

My old man lives in Florida, a place called Maitland. I had lost track of him for 25 years and found him by complete chance when I was speaking to a guy at CFC who is a teaching assistant at the collage he works at. Small world!

Anyway, give me a shout when you are ready

                            • Just loaded up my .sav game and all the graphics have reverted back to the ToT type. I tried other scenarios and they are fine. Tried to begin scenario to see if that was any differend but no, still s**ty ToT graphics!?! My units/terrain/cities files are all in the correct folder.

I cannot remember changing anything since last time I opened the game so I am a bit puzzled! Does anyone have any idea what has happened?

                              *EDIT
Ignore the above! I had changed the folder name from FORTRESS EUROPE to FORTRESS EUROPE (Werd100). When I changed it back the game read the files correctly!

                              Time to do some work!
