  • CIVILIZATION II - 21st Century improvement

Scenario Design and Modding has come a long way since the 90s - numerous games of standard Civ2 over the years have pointed in the direction of a complete revision of the tech tree, wonders & units. In many respects an improvement on the Vanilla Civ2 rules would a complete rewrite of the rules and technologies, as well as the statistics for the units. 11 additional units exist that could be used, in addition with the other unit slots to represent a more realistic interpretation of human civilization. I for one am dismayed at the lack of a Medieval Age in Civilization II, the pikeman & Richard's Crusade being the only unit that seems to represent this era.

Wonders too, in my opinion, need to be revised for gameplay purposes. Leonardo's Workshop comes too early in the game... perhaps it should be renamed to 'Ford's Assembly Line' and come in much later in the game. I don't like the idea of civilizations early on in the game being able to have massive advantages over over civilizations, and more often than not win the game with great ease. Darwin's Voyage could for example become a ancient wonder (perhaps even becoming 'The Great Library') and the Great Library later on becoming the internet. These are just ideas, but I think with a bit of thought and discussion one could revise the entire structure of Civ2 for a better gameplay experience.

So much knowledge has been acquired over the years with regards to editing Civ2 - For example, impassable mountain terrain which only mountaineers can pass. Our knowledge of the ins and outs of the technology Tree now allows us to do some amazing things.

I would dearly love to find a team committed to starting a new improved rule set for civ2, one with the vision and foresight to create a better Civilization II experience

I agree with your suggestions. One huge invention missed entirely by Civ2 is the internet, ironically hitting it's stride just when Civ2 was released. I also agree about the lack of a medieval period, or rather the fact that it passes by before you can even build the units. The same could be said for the gunpowder era.

The best solution would be to insert all the unused techs between Feudalism and Conscription (or some similar pair of techs). In ToT there are 10 unused techs available for this, plus Plumbing.

good idea techumesh with regards to technology placement between feudalism and conscription. my only concern now would be what new units to implament with the available slots, from feudalism to conscription. a balance between the available units for the feudal and gunpowder age.

I have read somewhere that it is possible to make mountain terrain impassable, but only permisable to mountaineers. how is this done? if it is possible to do this then I would keep mountaineers as part of the modern warfare age, but if not then it would be ok in my opinion to get rid of the unit all together, as steven strayer did with his famous fascist patch, where the rifleman was improved to the more modern infantry unit.

I would dearly love to have biplanes as a prelude to fighters and bombers, but i'm concerned that i may be using up too many unit slots.

For years I have changed fundamentalism into fascism, with stronger units replacing the fanatic - i chaged the unit support for this government to three and enhanced the unit support for communism to 10... but still i felt there is an imbalance with fascism as it has the fanatic slot as a free 'support' unit, which it can build in abundance. no unhappiness problems also provide a problem for me... i feel that a major part of government simulation is taken out of civ2 with this game rule, and turns government into nothing more than a sand box mode. i just don't know, and would be glad to hear people's comments with regard to this.

As I said, i want a total renewal of the civilization wonders... leonardo's workshop in my opinion must come later in the game, and only last for a short period of time. It should be seen as a wonder that simply gives a player the chance to quickly upgrade all it's current units to the latest model, and not as some all powerfull wonder that allows th player to endlessly amass the latest technologicaly advanced army without any work.

How advanced is the civ2 communities knowledge of controlling the AI? can it only be done with events? is it possible to make the ai build huge, massive expanding empire's on a giga map that meet up with eachother ? if anyone knows anything about this, then please say.

again, i cannot stress how helpful your feedback is, and your posts are all duly appreciated.

        Hello everyone.

How does one make mountain terrain impassable, but only permissable to mountaineers? What should I be reading up on?

If we are talking ToT, just flag it impassable and grant mountaineers the ignore impassable flag @Units 2 in the rules.txt.
If we are talking MGE, put an immobile air unit with no graphic over it. If mountaineers are the only air units, only they can attack it.
If the mountaineers are a unique civ, make the air unit theirs. So only they can go through it.
Or make mountains occupy the sea slot & make mounties hellicopter units.

You can use the pollution icon to cover them up, if you still want regular ocean, but will need a house rule to prevent the mountaneers from wondering into regular ocean.
