  • Voltar, you are assuming that ALL civs will build SDIs for all of their cities. Yes, it is easy for India, but what about Russia? Lots of cities and not even the technology to build SDI. So what we get here is a civ with SDI in all cities attacking a country, with nukes, without SDI defence. And what about carriers/ships/stacks outside cities? Nobody will want to leave their SDI defended cities, thus making this aforementioned 'conventional warfare' boring and riskless.

However, if you introduce the vulnerability that nukes give, we must take more risks and rely on our diplomatic skills rather than the amount of shields a city has.

    • If you say so, this just changes my long-term strategy, I am going into war-mongering mode as I know that eventually someone will come and nuke the **** out of me.

      • In an old PBEM of Vendetta (CDG I think), I was the 3rd Reich and I conquered America with a lot of help from strategical nukes. So me and the remaining powers saw the importance of nuclear weapons and how they were tolerated (and in civ we tolerate nukes more than in the real world). So we went to the negotiation table to draw out a Nuclear proliferation treaty. The moral of the story is: nukes are powerful and the only thing that should regulate that power is diplomacy and fear (which should be exacerbated by skillfull diplomacy).

To apply this to NWO, we can see that nukes create a new, exciting tool for diplomacy, not only for warfare. So if Russia and the EU would fall in bad terms and war would start, Europe, being inferior to Russia in its nuclear capabilities, would want to ensure that nukes will not be used in the conflict. This will mean you need to support from other nuke-weilding nations to scare the enemy.

Also, if most people are willing to role-play, they will condemn people who use nukes, ally or not. That is why I am a staunch supporter of the UN system we had in previous NWOs. It forced people to get more into their roles and allowed advanced civilization diplomacy, which would otherwise be ignored.

EDIT: Nukes are not used that lightly, Voltar. People always (or at least the 'veteran' players) consider carefully before using nuclear weapons, because it has serious consequences (especially with these aforementioned 'veteran' players who have distanced themselves from vanilla civ and the dumb AI).

Voltar, you always have the choice of using nukes... the point is that other civs also have them!! so, you´ll probably suffer the consequences.
some people may even feel that you are ruining their strategies and eventually will try to stop you...

in a few words, you can use them and go into war-mongering mode. i wont stop you... my civ cant stop you. i just hope that others do that...
you are the most powerful civ here

in any case, not having the SDI improvement as buildable, is my choice as the scenario designer. i really dont want it in the game.
but regarding the use of nukes, you guys are free to use them.

                          • Let's try to get a momentum again. The holidays are over and now, ironically, we have to play PBEMs along with work now
