I would really just put the whole of Japan under UN control,
and leave the operational choices to the player. Making sure
the cities in Japan have a realistic economic and production
level for the era is the important thing.

I would make a realistic rendition of Korea in 1950, with the
surrounding states and military gameboard laid out, then
leave it up to the player how he prosecutes the warfare.

Keep it simple, keep it streamlined.

I'd forget about a Japanese civ altogether - make the Japanese cities UN controlled as Curt says. What's the point of including them?

Go for a simulation of the Korean War rather than a speculative 'what-if' scenario with potential WW3 outcome.

Just glanced at your improvements list. Surely 'MASH' should be a happiness improvement rather than a barracks?

I think that solution to the Japan issue is likely best, though I still don't want RoK infantry being built there. I'll figure out something; maybe a house rule. I do want to keep things simple and streamlined, but a few complexities rise up here and there. As for MASH units, you're probably right fairline. Maybe I'll put them in the Temple slot.

you can even leave mysticism or CB undiscovered and have it given to the civ at some point representing new equipment or field medical technology

That would be a nice touch. As for Japan, I think I will leave it UN-controlled, and follow H Tower's advice of using a special Japanese terrain slot to keep the Japanese cities only producing enough shields to support their occupational forces (who'll be non-disbandable). I'd probably also better abandon any lingering ideas of escalation with the Soviets and focus on the war itself.

Other than as US home base, why would you include Japan at all? Earlier in the thread, you said 4 civs only.

And there are still only 4 civs, and Japanese cities on the edge of the map are still UN-controlled US bases. The issue I'm bringing up is how to stop the UN player from building RoK infantry (the UN's only buildable unit) in those cities, as that wouldn't make much sense. Thus, such things as blocking barb units and restrictive terrain are being considered. I hope that puts your mind at rest, tech.

If there's one or two US cities in Japan, and they build ROK infantry, that's not the end of the world. There are always trade offs.

Don't worry, tech, the issue's been dealt with reasonably for now. The question I have now, for anyone who'd like to give input, is should I start the scen in June '50, when the NKPA crossed the 38th, or in August when the RoK and newly-arrived UN forces were confined to the Pusan Perimeter and began their push outward?

I think it'd be more interesting to play in June. It would help to put the push out of the Pusan Perimeter into context. After avoiding being pushed off the Peninsula by the narrowest of margins, continuing the campaign into North Korea, or China, to finish the whole war would be very enticing, despite the historical results of that.

So TL thinks June. Anyone think August? Or more arguments for June? Right now I can see either (but I have been swayed somewhat by TL's opinion). It occurs to me that starting in June may allow the UN to stop the fall of much of SK if they move troops from Japan right away.

After some thought on the matter, I'll go with June as the starting point. However, the UN player will only begin with SK infantry and one SK M8/M20 unit (the 1st Cavalry Regiment) in South Korea when Kim's forces invade with NK infantry, T-34's, Su-76's, and some prop planes. The initial US forces will be in Japan, and all other UN forces, of course, coming via events.
