  • Diplomacy crash problem!

    Howdy!

I have a save file that keeps crashing when I try diplomacy.
It is something to do with the rules file, as I have isolated the problem by removing all files and adding them back,
one by one...I was wondering if anyone would like to look over the rules and tell me if they see anying that would
mess up the diplomacy? I have been up till 3am with this bug, and my brain is melting with frustration over it!

Any help would be massively appreciated!

    PS
It is a ToT rules file, based on the 'original' settings.

I think the only sections to do with diplomacy would be the @CIVILIZE and maybe @LEADERS sections. The latter was hardly changed...

So I made some good use of the tech tree checking utility civ2tech I made a while ago...

It pointed out to me that Soviet Apparatus (Industrialization) has itself as a prerequisite. I think removing that loop should fix the problem, unless there are more tech tree errors. In that case my utility can help again (if you manage to get it to work now, since you didn't in that thread).

Also, speaking of the @LEADERS section, you used Führer for the male title, but Fuehres for the female title. My German isn't any good, but I think the correct female form would be Führerin.

Right, you'd better check your tech tree some more.

I "fixed" that problem by just giving Soviet Apparatus nil prerequisites to see what other bugs there were...

Aircraft Carriers (Navigation) also has itself as a prerequisite. And Royal Air Force (Monarchy) and RAF Fighter 1 (Democracy) both require eachother.

Merc, you are indeed a genius!

I had no idea that program was complete and operational!
Indeed, the soviet tech was messed up - Such a tiny detail can lead to huge problems...

I must have cut and pasted tech lines, and forgot to change the preq techs.

I have downloaded your creation and will give it a shot...!
Surely the community has been shouting out for this kind of program forever!

        Again, cheers!

I'll try to ask it here, because I got no response elsewhere: at some point of my TOT games, they crash if I build new cities. Sometimes only if I build cities on a specific terrain (Blue Hall or whatever in the undergrounds) HELP ME!!!!

          please

You know us, Heresson - We'll help if we can!

Can you post your 'rules', 'game' and 'city' files here for us to have a look at?

No problem, Curt. And please do try it.

@Heresson: Is that with standard ToT or have you edited files? Do you have the 1.1 patch?

Are you by any chance using the No Limits Units version of TOT.exe developed by Skyer?

I did check that that the units count could exceed 2048 but did not check anything else. Considering that Skyer's No Limits Units version of MGE did not work at all, it is possible that his changes to the TOT version may have introduced an unexpected problem with the number of cities.

                  Nope - I never implemented Skyer's program...

Pity it never delivered the promised potential.

It is just the normal ToT no-limits for money and population.

I think he was asking Heresson... Your problem was solved already, move over! (never mind we're threadjacking your thread)

Edit: Actually, did fixing the tech tree problems actually solve the diplomacy crash? Or haven't you been able to make the changes or test them yet?

Yep - All is now working fine and dandy...*moves over*

If Heresson can post his files, I am positive we can fix what is going wrong!

Thank You, I will post my files soon. Nom I am not using any addition except for something that allows me to not have cd in the computer while playing.
I do want to use Skyes's No Limits thing when it comes to my scenario = the thing that halted my scn development was a problem with too many units mostly - sometimes it does not occur, but in some games it was making the game impossible. So either I use Skyer's thing, or I have to rethink my events. Or give up. I have long lost will to finish this scenario, perhaps I need a fresh start. But it is so close to being finished that it would be a shame. All I need is a bit more balance and getting rid of this units problem. But I haven't made anything really important when it comes to it for a year or two, just correcting minor stuff while new and new problems arise.

Before you seriously consider using Skyer's nolimit units version of the TOT .exe file, please check out

There are still a lot of unknowns about Skyer's modifications but it does appear that a scen has to be built using the nolimits .exe. Even so, if I was developing a scen with an untried .exe, I would test extensively every step of the way.

Here are the files. Problem occured in Extended Original and in Fantasy game, so I'm sending Fantasy files. I don't recall it occuring in normal game, but perhaps I haven't played it enough. For sure it wasn't occuring while I was playing my scn.
                            Thanks for help

                              Hmmm, it crashes indeed!

                              ...

Woohoo! I found the problem! It's a bad translation error. The Polish translators renamed @EXTRA (for the extra cities) to @Ekstra. But unlike the civilization names, @EXTRA is hard-coded.

In your savegame, you had run out of Goblin city names. When you try to build another city, Civ2 searches for the extra city names, but it can't find them and crashes.

Renaming @Ekstra back to @EXTRA in the City.txt file should fix the bug.
