  • Empires at War: Medieval

Since my summer leave practically starts today, I figure I'd better do something creative about it. This is a preview the eurasian gigamap I'm currently working on. The projected scenario runs from 1071 to 1492. The civs are the:

    Mongols (protagonists)
    Chinese
    Europeans (united for the crusades)
    Byzantines
    Russians
    Arabs
    Turks

I also have a provisional unit list and .bmp ready, however since this is for TOT, top notch graphics are hard to come by. I'm actually counting on Gareth letting me use his latest Sino-Mongol masterpieces. Eitherway, there is a lot of work ahead.
    Any ideas/suggestions are wellcome.

Are there enough slots for all of these units?

Sure! ToT has room for 80 units, and the abovementioned units take just 69-70 slots. I have 10 to 11 slots for siege machines, merchants and anything that comes up. Ain't ToT a beauty?

I am currently working on the stats, so I'm thinking of merging the generic horse archer with the Turkoman horse archer, the Russian with the Byzantine Varangoi & the Askaris with the Gullams, to free 3 more slots.

Persia is under Seljuk Turkish/ Kwarizimian rule at this time. Freelance Iranian cavalry will be represented by barbarian Gullams
N.Africa is Arabic, however I'll make the western Moors barbs, to show their lack of unity.
African nomads will be represented by spawned barb Desert Nomads (Berbers & Saharans)
African slave troops will be spawned as barb African tribes
Black sub-Saharan empires (Muslim & Coptic Christian) will be represented by barb cities.
                    -edit-
I must include a Samurai unit too. Minus 1 slot.

What about western or turkish mercenaries?
"Military training has three purposes: 1)To save ourselves from becoming subjects to others, 2)to win for our own city a possition of leadership, exercised for the benefit of others and 3)to exercise the rule of a master over those who deserve to be treated as slaves."-Aristotle, The Politics, Book VII

If they kill generic barb horse archers or Turcomans, a generic horse archer unit gets spawned in the capital, minus a sum. If they loose a horse archer unit to the Arabs or Turks, it gets spawned in their capitals (they switch sides) and again the Byzantine side looses a sum. The Byzantines will need a lot of money to keep things running.
Lancers (representing Caucasian/Balkan/East European light cavalry in general) African slave troops for Arabs & Turkopoles for the Crusaders will work much the same way but they wont change sides or charge too much.
To procure other kinds of mercenaries, the player will have to bribe them.
Some prerequisite techs won't be researchable by one side until it gets to trade for them.
For instance, the Arabs won't be able to upgrade from Gullams to Mamluks until they trade with the Russians for slave troops.
