There does seem to be some interest in a get together. Suggested cities are: Amsterdam (3), Glasgow (2), Thessaloniki (2). Cities receiving one vote each are: Canberra, Damascus, Baghdad, and Toronto.

For those who would have to take a major trip to get to one of the top three, answer these questions:

    1. Were you hoping to have a European vacation in the next 5 years?

    2. If yes, why not next year?

    3. If next year, why not include the weekend of August 5&6 in your plans?

Start planning and saving now, you might really get that European vacation you were daydreaming about!

Leaving aside the question of venue for the mo, while the idea of a meet-up is very appealing, the idea of meeting just for a piss-up is not. I'm not a big drinker and find time spent in the pub is wasted when I could be doing other things.

Wouldn't it be better to have a central event or activity in mind? Examples such as:

      - LAN gaming party (why is this at the top of the list? )
      - Paintballing
      - Quad biking / Go-karting
      - Charter a sailing ship!
      - clay pigeon shooting

      - nominations are open

Amsterdam is closer to me than Glasgow is (one of those quirks of Euro-UK geography), so gets my vote.

One of the things I'm planning to do is visit some historical battlefield sites - the Canadian memorial at Vimy Ridge being one.

Paint ball is fun, but hard on an old fart like me. I'll be the general if that's ok with everyone.

I'd suggest that if we get this off the ground, we meet for dinner for starters. If some want to continue socializing into the evening, they can. Other things can be organized according to the desires of the participants.

            Yes

            Why not indeed?

Because it's the hottest and most expensive time to visit Europe (the exchange rate is bad enough without having to pay peak time premiums on everything!). How about spring or autumn?

The advantage of a pss-up is that, when managed properly, you've got lots of time to talk to people, which you don't have when you're running around shooting them.

Spring or autumn would be fine, but I'm assuming fewer people would be able to get time off. Sorry for the northern hemispheric chauvanism, Nick.

Is spring or autumn more or less possible for a European trip than summer for everyone?

Nick, youth hostels are quite cheap accomodations in such places. I recall being to Helsinki last summer in a youth hostel which was about 15€ per night - a good deal for the centre of a European capital if you ask me.

@ MarkG: You are right about that too. Best time in fall would be around the end of October/beginning of November. At least in (officially) catholic countries there are chuch holidays on 1 Nov.

And do you intent to make a train stop between Milano and Geneva this time?? (note: the beer was getting warm, so I drank it and will buy new ones...)

                    How about spring or autumn?
For me, Spring or Autumn would be much better (without any guarantee though...), as Summer is a time of BIG BIG work But maybe I could manage it in Summer too...

True enough! What I would like the most if meeting SL fellows would be the opportunity to talk with them (and being at last able to put a face on well-known names ), with or without getting drunk in the process

Okay, so you vote against getting together for drinking but vote fot Amsterdam? Are you suggesting soething else

As for next year, I'll have to check it out. While it's unlikely, I do want to skip an entire term to go visit europe (otherwise it's only two months) which would enable me to work for a while to get more money for the sightseeing. So, if all goes well, last half of next year is not entirely improbable...

Perhaps we should make a smaller scale meeting, or people who already are in europe :/

what are the top choices for the meeting location atm?

i live just behind the central (grotesquely thin)white building
