  • The World of Jules Verne

It is a time of civility and a time of brutality. It is the age of enlightenment and the age of ignorance. A time of exploration, and a time of conquest. A new era in the world is dawning, an era that will see advances made that could never until now have even been imagined by the likes of mere mortals, this is certain.

What is not certain is what this era will hold for mankind, will it be an era of peace and the advancement of science or will it be an era of war on an industrial scale. Will this new era unite man as one or continue to divide nations and empires. These are the choices that await you in this new wondrous age of ours. The year is 1861.... and the great powers of the world now lay at your command. In the America's lies a house divided against itself, and old Europe stands fractured by old rivalry. In the middle east and sands of North Africa the Islamic world strives to rise against her rivals in Europe. In the far east lies the Asians, most populous yet still the most unknown of the world's empires. From the American West to the hills of South Africa stir the Aboriginal Confederation, a newly formed alliance of native people's struggling to survive the onslaught of foreign settlements. Finally, in the most distant corners of the world lie a collection of hidden cities, invisible fortresses and uncharted settlements, all of which together form the mysterious secret society.

There are many paths ahead of you on this day.... will you choose the path of blood and conquest in the name of wealth or will you choose the path of enlightenment. Will you seek to plant your flag on all corner's of the world or will you advance the knowledge of man? Most importantly of all, will you dare dream that a man can step foot on the moon before the end of the nineteenth century?

These are the choices you face my friend in the world of Jules Verne. A world where gigantic apes lead massive armies into battle, where prehistoric dinosaurs are unleashed on unsuspecting metropolis's. It is a world where ancient cities hold key's to the future of civilization itself, and fabled monsters threaten all the civilized world. It is a world, that through all her trials and tribulations is being observed by an intelligent greater than man's.

This my friend.... is the world of Jules Verne.

Well, these will be the playable civ's:

        The Anglo Alliance
        The Continental Alliance
        Islam
        Asia
        The Aboriginal Confederacy
        The Secret Society

Yes, this means even the Aboriginals will have a chance at winning the race to the moon in this game. It also means that Fu Manchu's Secret Society can threaten all corner's of the world.

All nations will have a basic infantry, a more advanced infantry that can be researched and a wide variety of special units that either have special abilities or trigger events.

Also, there will be added incentive to reach the moon and make contact with the Selenites. For you see, he who makes it from the Earth to the Moon and back again first will bring back with them secret technology... the likes of which could never be imagined by mortal men.

Also, as previously indicated the civ that captures either Kong from Skull Mountain or the dinosaur's from the Venezuelan Plateau can then in turn use the monster as a weapon in battle. A weapon that of course cannot be rebuilt if destroyed.

Well, most of the units are derived from the MPS version, just updated to modern standards, I assume. However, here's the two new units I suggested last night on MSN: the Confederate Raider and the Dervish. Both are by fairline (I only claim credit in actually digging them up on the Industrial Units Showcase thread). These use the MGE format, so if you are using ToT, you may have to do a little retooling.

              sounds excellent Sarsstock!

I always liked the original Jules Verne scenario (for the reasons you developed in you introductory post! ), so I am really eager to see this!

Will it be a improvement upon the original scen, or an original one (using some elements from the old one)??

If you check out River War by Allard ( ), you'll see that the 'Dervish' above is actually an Egyptian lancer. Several examples of mounted and unmounted Dervishes can be found in his units.gif. Fairline drew a lot of superb icons for Allard's remakes of River War and Boer War. If they're not already in the showcase, these scens would be a good source for several units.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but these remakes are probably on CDG. Spanish site, too?

                Btw, as for the topic...

Thankyou Boco, I will go hunt down those Dervish units ASAP. I also do like your idea Patine of including a Confederate Raider unit, possibly old Jeb Stuart himself. I'm glad you like my idea Cyrion, I was hoping I would strike a cord with the players who went out and bought the MGE expansion disc when it first came out nearly a decade ago and palyed it for hours upon hours.

As for the question whether this is a remake or my own scenario..... well its going to be a remake, but a heavy duty remake. Expect to see some familar unit names with some familiar event trigger units. At the same time I've added some new twists to the story. For instance, we all know that despite the fact the scenario was named "Jules Verne" that it involved aspects from many different writers. Arthur Conan Doyle, H.G. Wells and Edgar Rice Burroughs. I'm going to add the likes of Harry Turtledove to that list for this scenario.... though I realize his writings are far more contemorary than the others. I'm also going to include story lines from more of Doyle's work, for instance I'm considering including the character Im Ho Tep and the fabled city of Hamunatra from Doyle's "The Mummy". As for what Turtledove's contribution will be to the game.... well are any of you familiar with the premise for the story "Guns of the South"?.......

Okay gents, here are some units that are likely to make an appearance in The World of Jules Verne. On the top row are two different kinds of Dervish Cavalrymen, and I'm torn between which one to use. Personally I'm leaning towards the second of the two as it seems more exotic looking what with the pointed helmet.

In the second row are a Japanese Samurai, a strange and mysterious Secret Cavalry, a possible Jeb Stuart Raider unit and an Ottoman Cavalry unit.

Many more to come in the coming days.

If you're going to use my suggestion I gave on MSN and have a Mars map, check out Cradle of Civilization. They have a great ToT Mars scen with a good map and terrain set. You may want to tweak it to better fit the image of Victorian fiction, though.

Thanks Patine but this scenario will take place on Earth and Earth alone. I plan on using a world Gigamap with all the major rivers and water ways in place.
