    hello,

My name is Bill Rudd. I am a long-time Civ II player, but have only recently started experimenting with the scenario editor.

There is quite a bit of helpful informaiton available on this site and elsewhere, but it can be daunting to sort through it all. Please excuse me if my questions are already answered elsewhere.

I would like to restrict the orders available to certain units. For example, a diplomat that can bribe, but not steal knowledge; a settler that can build roads, but not irrigate; you get the idea. Can someone help me with detailed instructions? My computer skills are quite novice (infact, i've had problems posting to this site!)

I am also amazed by the quality of the art I have seen on this site, and I'm wondering if anyone can point me toward previous "insect" artwork, especially ants, or is willing to help me with the art. Of course, i have been trying my own hand, but i am not an artist.

    Thanks for the help!

    Sincerely,
    birubiru

Hi and welcome to the SLeague!

About your queries: restricting diplomatic abilities can be accomplished by opening up the game.txt, finding the appropriate line e.g. "steal technology" and deleting it. Look at Captain Nemo's "2nd Front" or Mike Daumen's "The Great Game" for examples on this. This only works on a human player though - the AI can continue to use these options.

It's not possible to disable settler building of either roads, mining or irrigation. You can restrict them from building farmland and railroads by preventing them from developing the appropriate techs.
STDs are like pokemon... you gotta catch them ALL!!!

If an unwanted option cannot be totally disabled, it can be made unappetizing. For example, in the "cheat" and "scenario" menus the values can be changed for the road multiplier and how irrigation affects terrain.

Oh yeah, and welcome Nice to see new people here

Welcome. I can help you a bit with limiting diplomats and spies. The following thread deals with spies but the procedure would be the same for diplomats.

You can limit the capabilities of these units by altering the GAME file. Remember that if you delete an option in the file you must add a blank line so as to retain the relative spacing of all lines (i.e. don't change the number of lines in the file).
Excerpts from the Manual of the Civilization Fanatic :

Money can buy happiness, just raise the luxury rate to 50%.
Money is not the root of all evil, it is the root of great empires.

            よろしくおねがいします。

Thanks for the help with the diplomats!

Original idea was not to eliminate road building from the game per say, but rather to spread the settler functions over a number of units, so 'worker 1' would build roads, worker 2 irrigation, and a super worker could do both. i thought i saw something similar in the big colonization modpack.

if i want multiple generations of settlers i suppose that i can change production values and such.

Thanks for the help, and the welcome.

            Sincerely,
            br

              Hi Bill, welcome!

I'd be interested in helping you with some ants. I assume they are to be units?

I've been trying to make a grasshopper lately, but haven't been pleased enough with my efforts to post them here.

Here's one of my attempts; I think I can do better but just haven't got round to it.

i would love some help with ants, of course! i lost a couple during a recent reinstall of windows, but they weren't that great anyway. Valmont, thank you!

rough draft roster of units based on current tech tree, of which (one) is complete:

                  Small Queen (paradropping settler)
                  Large Queen (paradropping engineer)
                  Worker 1
                  Worker 2
                  Soldier 1
                  Solidier 2
                  Exotic Soldier
                  Ants 1,2, and 3
                  Forager (explorer)
                  Leaf-Raft
                  Poison Ants
                  Co-ordinated Ants
                  Nest Police
                  Tiny Ants
                  Drones
                  Flying Ant
                  ant (warrior)
                  Slaver-Ant (spy)
                  Under-Water Ant
                  Killer Ant
                  Jurassic Ants
                  Spider
Ant-Lion (nearly invisible, and no shield?)
                  Grasshopper

Any help, including ideas and comments, cordially appreciated. Current plan is 'realistic', possibly similar to Dinasaurs scenario in Fantastic Worlds, as theme. Eventually will probably be requesting help with terrain art, people, and cities as well. Spiders from the fantasy colection seem great! Also some good grub insects in previous collections for terrain resources.

I may re-post this basic idea on the main page for brainstorming help before i get too far in...

                    Thanks! spys are working perfectly.

I made several changes to GAME file while I was at it; but late at night and not carefully. So far all changes seem to work correctly without adverse effects; however I did not notice your caution to retain blank lines. Will there be consenquences down the road for not retaining these blanks?

No, I don't think so. It's only the spacings between between sequential main headings such as

                        @SPYOPTIONS

                        @SABOTAGEOPTIONS

                        @BLEWITUP

that appear to be important. If it works OK now, it should continue to work just fine. Anyway, if a problem develops with popups farther down the list, you know where to look for the problem.
