  • New Units for Red Storm Rising Scenario

Well I am working on a few new units for a scenario loosely based on Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising and I am also trying to factor in some modern military developments in terms of technology/units that have occured since the golf (pun intended) war in 1991, especially in regards to maneavour warfare and recon type stuff.

Some loose ideas todate (input welcome)

Special Ops troops: Spy and paradrop abilities, also sub advantages/disadvantages. Aprox 1.5 times cost of a mech inf. unit.

SR71: Same cost as stealth bomber, but double range and zero attack value. Also sub advantages/disadvantages. Also ignores ZOC.

    UAV's: ??????

SSBN: present day sub in civ
SSN: Sub, but cannot carry missles, slighty faster than ssbn

Other thoughts or additions are welcome. One final question though, is it possible to modify air units (bombers) to carry cruise missiles?

You should talk to FiGu. He was working on a Red Storm Rising scenario a while ago...

      Sadly, no! This is impossible...

This should make the survival of the US Navy easier, if my memory doesn't betray me

I read the novel back in Junior High School when it was actually speculative military fiction, not 'what if' history. I would suggest several unique types of tanks, APC's, fighters, bombers, and ships for each side, certainly, and a giga-world map (there's plenty of those floating around), but focusing the action on Europe and the Middle East. Third World players should use lower echelon Soviet and Western vehicles (even mixing them) and have inferior infantry, but some with the alpine quality. Just some advice.

RSR started in 1986, not 1991. I'd advise 1986 because by 1991, most of the Soviet area of influence had broken away, including even parts of the USSR itself.
