        Everybody seems to be inviting me to prolong my tour of Institute duty...

        I always build my first wonder with 4 camels (switched from settlers) after trade, which should be in 2 techs (would have been the one we are researching now but for my rash indulgence with the hut). Is that an inferior plan? If so, then I really should have mined the coal to use it for the wonder city, and even eventually built on it. What is the prevailing thought about that?

            2000BC - Goal is to improve the local aesthetics by building some nice flowers. Convert Settler in Carthage to Horseman. Switch to shield economy.

            1950BC - Horse in Carthage, start Colossus; Caralis founded.
            1900BC - Panormus founded; Malaca build Settler;
            1850BC -
            1800BC -
            1750BC -
            1700BC - Uttica builds Settler
            1650BC - Population 110,000; hut reveals Horseman;
            1600BC -
            1550BC -
            1500BC - High Council - we are second in Science;
            1450BC - Map Making->Pottery surprise!
            1400BC -
            1350BC -
            1300BC - Malaca trains up Settler
            1250BC - Panormus builds Settler
            1200BC - Macauley confirms that we are the Second most advanced civ; Germans start Pyramids; Caralis completes Settler;
            1150BC -
            1100BC - Noble Settlers reveal the hidden Silk outside Carthage!
            1050BC - Settler joins Carthage (4);
            1000BC - The Empire is nearly joined by roads; Pottery will come in next turn hopefully to be followed by Trade; The Great Gardens (in the guise of a large statue) are half built. Two Settlers are bound for sites to the NE - one a three special the other I thought on the Buffalo, the decisions are now yours ...

                  Looks quiet --

                  -1000 (0) (Babs start GL) discover Pott; opt for Trade over Write & four other techs. Pop = 200K

                  -900 (4) (Romans start Col; Ger move capital to Leipzig)
                  -875 (5) found Leptis Parva in the North
                  -850 (6) Panoramus squirts out a settler; found Cartenna with two fish in the south.
                  -825 (7) Found Rusicade with 3 (or more) specials in the east.
                  -800 (8) (Leipzig announces the discovery of Philosophey (Rats); Sioux move capital to Wounded Knee.)
                  -775 (9) Discover Trade, opt for Write
                  -750 (10) Utica implodes, growing to size three, hire an Elvis)
                  -700 (12) 1st camel (food for wonder) is born.
                  -675 (13) Chinese start GL
                  -650 (14) Pop = 300K
                  -600 (16) The Hanging Gardens appear in Carthage.
                  -500 (20) Four camels arrive in Carthage for the Colossus

                  (Seeing as though the Romans started this 16 turns ago, I felt that this wonder was more at risk than Marco's.)

                  We also have a few more camels well along for Marco's -- maybe in a few turns in a more central location.

                    Nope -- on second read --

                    No Marco's

                    Good thing I caught that thought in time.

                    Makes the Colossus even more important!

                      Pity Carthage is so poorly sited - who goes to The Institute for flunking Initial City Siting 101?

                        And La Fayette is the one looking for special offers on brosses à dents in Auchan at the moment for the siting of Carthage.

                            as far as initial city goes, Carthage is ok; as far as starting a wonder for SSC site goes -- how come that nice East site (Rusicade) was left open for so long -- and the wonders should have been built there.

                              If someone is unhappy with the siting of Carthage, please load the game at 4000BC and explain to me what was to be done.

                              (until then I don't feel guilty at all )

                                I don't know. Maybe Stu uses Hut(and special)Finder from the off, so he'd know where to put his first city. I doubt it though. I always use a map and loads of guesswork.
