  • I realized something in the turns I played. I'm used to celebrating in representative governments, and I've rarely played in fundy and never celebrated in fundy. In a representative government, if a city slips out of celebration for a turn, it's not a big deal; you can just rearrange your citizens and start the city celebrating again. In fundy, you lose the trade bonus, and you can't usually get celebrating again without setting your whole empire to high luxuries. I lost a couple of celebrations that way before I noticed what should have been obvious to me.

      • Now, Raz, this is simply not good enough! You can't avoid RCC by so simple an expedient as not bothering to post a decent log!

Tell us the gory details and then we shall offer the RCC you crave =>

        • 1852 (continued) -- there are five German cities, Three Bab cities and a Persian one left. We have 103, not that anyone is counting. We see four of the German cities and all of the Bab ones -- leaving the Persian and a German one to find.

Hmmmm try the Go to function on a southern boat -- Ah HA! Tyre is a port and available as a destination -- and our ship sails away to the SW…

Deliver a couple of trucks for 132-165 coins; not too exciting so we don’t touch too many more of them. (we’re researching Atomic theory, so there’s no excitement there either.) A bab engineer is available for 1.2K (we have 8K+, but we still say no.) Ur is defended by five rifles (has SunTsu s0 there’re all vets) and Walls -- one spy knocks down their temple, another an aqueduct and a third fails; two out of three fail to return. move a few more folks.

1853 -- Our last spy drops Ur’s walls -- a couple of cav move in and take out a rifle -- the battle is underway.

We find and buy Tyre -195, +246, a wonder and some other stuff. Persia is no more.

1854 -- We successfully connect a long RR (founding Along the Way accordingly -- Hmmm it takes one engineer to found a city, but three for a road/RR -- maybe we should do it this way more often?) and reinforcements arrive in the Babylonian arena. Take Ur by force +98, Theology and troop upgrades. buy Babylonia -350, +93, a bab eng for 244 (in the way) and Ninevah -888, +158. the Babylonians are gone.

At this point, I decided to end my portion of the turn -- there are about a dozen troops in Celt world on the RR line to move to Bab world en route to Germany. There are also a couple of boats’ worth of troops on our western shores to ship over seas -- expect the Germans to fade away within five turns or less.

I think that the last German city is just NE of Bab world -- I’ve seen two cats appear there W/SW of the Barb outbreak.

Ohmigod, I can't believe this has never occurred to me. I guess I thought that, if I didn't know where the city was, the GoTo wouldn't know either. After all, I don't think you can find the city by using Find City, right? This could turn out to be very valuable to me in locating enemy cities in the earlier stages of games. Glad I played in this game!

I've often used engineers this way. You lose the engineer, so you don't want to do it until you're nearing the end of construction, but often by then you've got a lot of engineers and you're trying to push the roads through fast. And cities are useful anyway, of course....

            • I wish I thought of the city along the way idea earlier -- there is a nice canal spot that I RR'd by and two of the engineers I made I rolled right back into their gcreating cities because of the food problem -- a deficit AND nothng extra in the box -- they were going to vanish anyway...

actually, it was on the find city list because it contained a wonder. of course near a pole, we can determine the x coordinate but not necessarily the y coordinate even on max zoom - with enough black clicking you probably even could figure that as well if you really wanted to -

anyway, good to see the persians out of the way finally and nice work OnS on the RR

                • Yes - using GoTo is just a variation on the Find City "cheat", except it won't tell you where the city is exactly until you actually reach it.

I had the romantic notion that SG could perhaps do a "Magnusson" here ("I've started so I'll finish" - from a British TV quiz show), but since it's free-for-all then I suppose anyone can leap in. Besides, he said that he doesn't have lots of free time to play Civ 2 at the moment.

                        • We are Victorious!

1854. Look around. The goal must be to wipe out the Germans in my 5 turns. I fear it will not be possible, but I must try. From my predecessor:

At this point, I decided to end my portion of the turn -- there are about a dozen troops in Celt world on the RR line to move to Bab world en route to Germany. I think that the last German city is just NE of Bab world -- I’ve seen two cats appear there W/SW of the Barb outbreak. "
There are now 6 German cities; we have 108... That's a good sized lead on the Germans. We have 10,249 gold], with science at 1200 turns.

Tweak science to 50% - now 5 turns, so upgrades are coming.

A great number of our cities are building barracks. Now that Sun Tzu's has arrived, they are sold and changed to other more interesting white goods or war units. Wow - that was a lot of barracks!!

Move some cavalry to clear out the barbs in the way. Start a ship chain north to the Germans. Find Munich! Perhaps it will be possible to wipe out the Germans in time.

Move troops onto the shipchain; begin the transport of the army from Carthaginian island to Germany. Deliver some freights for piddling amounts, just to get them out of the way.

Press Return. Hmm, it seems to be 1856 already...

1856 Many Harbors finished. Found Cordoba. Found Sioux Canal West. Found Celtic Canal. Railroad to Munich. Troops land in Germany. Leipzig conquered. Barb Leader captured. Hamburg subverted (1760, +240). Konigsberg subverted (1887g, +120)

Germans are down to 2 cities.

1857 Atom Theo=>Combustion. Massive Upgrades. Central City builds JS Bach. (totally useless in Fundy, but important personally for Grigor..) Pollution near central city. Railroad completed all the way to Berlin. Berlin conquered. Pyramids captured. My successor can sell all granaries... Bribe Frankfurt (430g). We Win!
