  • you're just 2 turns away from frigates yourself (chemistry and astronomy), probably you're halfway to chemistry anyhow, i assume.

i'm afraid i have bad news for you: trying to prove that the odds can also backfire i just attacked both your caravels (the first attack spotted the second) and to my luck they both won their 32% odds! the chance of that happening was just 11%! but what is even more strange is that the second battle ended without a single damage to my unit each of my strikes was 3:3.3, so something around 45% for each shot... and i didn't even get a dent.

while i ofcourse appreciate it in this situation, i do find this "streakiness" quite odd...

    • hey, and how do you get the combat I ships? did you battle hannibal? or does a military instructor also affect the ships of a city?

            • I can't believe that 4 times in a row you have such a lucky streak.
              That's simply impossible.

Besides, I'm no match for you anyway so there's no fun for me continuing to play with you.

              • 3 times lucky... the first was 50-50.

so what are you implying? that i have a hacked version which gives me better odds?
you can send the save to firaxis, they can run it through their debugger...

... but all they'll say is that i was lucky, that's all...

                • I don't want to imply anything.
                  You won, I lost. Congrats.

I realize this makes me a spoilsport or worse, but I just don't believe it anymore.
Again, congratutalions on a game well-played. There's nothing more to do in it for me.

                    • i continued the game in SP. you still would have had a chance as ragnar converts to confucianism a few turns in, cancels all deals and builds yet more troops. so i attacked him when i got riflemen and cannons. just a few turns later he also got riflemen so i had to go for infantry too.

so it took me around 40 turns to take him out and by then the AI-led Geo had caught up 3 of my 5-tech lead and actually got the physics great scientist before me.

all in all: your chances may have been slim, but playing it right, you did have some chances. at least you would have been able to get up to par...

                      • so when you play single-player games: do you also just quit after 3 unlucky losses? or do you just reload?

I have a temper while playing, admittedly. And I had a fair idea on my chances if I played it smart, which would have clashed with my temper again. Your sig would have been appropriate then. I better stop playing MP altogether.
But god damned, 4 unlikely losses in a row? I never been so lucky to take out a naval opponent on 50/50 odds, let alone on lower odds save for a few weirdo catapults.

To answer your question: reloading is no use, I don't enable the random seed on reload. And if 5 times in a row 70-90% battle odds are lost I indeed exit a game. Might return later to it when I can take it again but offen I just delete the game.

As you saw things progressing was a bit as I planned: missionary-bombing Ragnar and helping him out if possible.

                          • i actually have quite a temper too, but i have chilled a lot since the beginning. i used to get furious when people ganged up on me or boycotted trades with me. but now i play for "myself". so i try to win as much as possible. in a 1on1 or with AI, i mostly succeed (i'm an extreme micromanager). in a 4 player game i often find an weak ally which i build up and help a lot (like g_storrow, he was hopelessly behind) a try to get him for a joint victory. i still consider this a win because allying with the 2nd strongest wouldn't be fair towards the others

as for reloading: i used to do it often, but then what's the point of the game? i mean... i don't reload if i WIN a 11% victory chance either, so why play unfair? and yes, i have also abandonned games due to bad developments. but usually when a emperor level AI razes my best cities or so

and now i regret attacking you. because you would have failed. as soon as ragnar had all cities with buddism, he switched. although he already had hinduism in all cities. doesn't make much sence, because financially there's no difference.

anyhow, your confucians would just have given you more money, not a same-religion ally.

                              • Money was all I needed to keep up with my maintenance costs.
And if I had succeeded in spreading my religion (and perhaps Christianity as well) I would have had a tremendous income.

One thing your naval superiority ended was my conflict with Hannibal. You more or less forced me to stop trying to take his capital and the chance of acquiring a vassal.

It shows you play for yourself. Essentially you're a human mix of Montezuma and Napoleon: suddenly the sneak attack.
I more prefer the building/diplomatic side, even if it leads to war after some oral disagreements.
Best game I ever had on this point was an Alpha Centauri PBEM.

Emperor level? Sofar I can only keep up with the AI in Monarch when playing with a financial civ till the Renaissance era on a continents map... might go better at a Pangea, Lakes, Terra or Ice-age map (narrow seas thus quicker contact with all). The typical continents start at Monarch gives at most 1 neighbouring AI.

I forgot to respond to this: in this case it was because of my civic settings. Altho I believe a military instructor would give 2 XP as well to ships.
Actually, I feel the Military Academy building obseletes West Point quite a bit. Now you can have essentially 2 military academies in one city.
