    • lol, having wrestled with the joys of setting up a pittboss game myself for the first time I know exactly what you are saying.

CivStats is a very useful program, and i take my hat off to whoever developed it, but the documentation is awful. Just read the FAQ for a quick laugh.

            • It's probably easier if you just set it to our names (or just send random ones on your own) ... you never need the registration password again so it doesn't really matter

                • Personally, I prefer it off whenever possiable. I think it makes players more accountable for thinking about their choosen path, as opposed to just going for high level techs knowing they will be able to trade (fill) in the gaps.

If we are going with it on, we may want to decided on some limiting factors like...

Only trade self discovered techs, or...

Only trade self discovered techs twice.

For a team game though, I really think tech trade should be off. You already have a partner to trade with. There are already "teams".

Also, if we are going with normal speed with TT this game is going to go at lightspeed. Personally, I like to be able to use my newly researched units before they are obsoleted twice over.

                  Just my opinion.

                    • pinchak played my first turn...

timer says 19 hours left. but will we get a reminder or some kind of info when everybody has played?

also: i'm not really happy with my starting position... this Y-wrapping thingy really sucks if you are stuck at one of the poles

                      • Sorry about starting positions nothing I can do about that. I am all for tech rules if you like even if we want to agree all as a group that there will be no tech trading. Pin see before I suggested a slower speed but was shouted down. To check on the status of the turns go to civstats.com look for Agean1 in the game list. It will tell you there what the year is who has played who hasn't. Send me a password for you civ (preferably different from the one for the game) and then you can even register yourself as the leader and when the turn is completed you will get an email. We didn't go through all the settings before we made the game for that I am sorry, live and learn though.

We didn't go through the settings because we were waiting for a host. We had waited a number of weeks - a few days more to get the start straight on a game that we will be playing for months does not seem unreasonable.

btw - epic is clearly out in a pitboss game. Sort of self defeating.

As to tech trading - we had not discussed it. In a team game such as this - it may not be unreasonable to turn it off. As Pinchak has suggested, it will put more onus on the team to plan their research - other than just getting into a trading frenzy.

One of the rules used in HOTW8 is that you can old trade techs that you have researched. This is a self-managed rule, and is not a bad compromise between the "none" and "all".

If the wrapping in one direction gives an awful start to some, or even one, then I agree we restart with just the east west wrapping.
Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war .... aw, forget that nonsense. Beer, please.

                            • In a PTBS, tech trading IMO should always be on; PTBS (/PBEM) is much more about diplomacy (and thus tech trading) than MP games are. Then again, though, this is a team game, so I don't mind it being off as much as I would in a normal PTBS game. That said, I don't like "self managed" rules like HOTW rules because they're hard to make sure you're following, even if you're trying to be honest it's easy to forget what you've traded.

Sabre, why does Y wrapping hurt your starting location?? I don't think it affects the starting locations at all, except in that it will (hopefully) allow you to be closer to your teammate. In the first (epic) game, I was at the far south pole, and my teammate was at the far north pole, for example. We both had plenty of cold things ...
